Scratching / Knocking Noise - 91 Celica

Hi, I have a noise coming from just behind the centre console in my 1991 Celica. It is apparent when I turn corners, particularly right hand bends. It also kicks in when I release the accelerator and the engine slows the car down.

I suspected it was the CV Joint, but took it in to Kwik-Fit on saturday and they tell me that "in their opinion" it is not the CV Joint. They could not offer any alternative.

The noise is like a scratching type of noise and there is regularly a knock when taking tighter bends and when releasing the clutch if you do it a bit heavier than normal.

Any advice appreciated.

What you describe sounds like a CV joint fault to me. Either that or wear on the inboard drive shaft.

jack the front end up so that both the tyres are about 2"-3" off the ground. Push and pull each wheel and look for any play. Use some kind of long lever to strss the bottom of the tyre to see if there's any play in the ball-joints. This should narrow down any suspension faults.

I had a clicking noise on both my corolla and carina when turning corners as well. Both times it turned out to be the front disc backing plate rubbing against the disc. It somehow got bent out of true and only caught on almost full lock. Remove the wheels and look for any bright metal on the backing plate which will be a sign of this.

Good luck
