Hi, i have a y-reg picnic, since March 05....recently it has decided when trying to start, just shut-down everything, and then a quiet beeping sound, for a few seconds. Its an electrical short of some kind, as the usual lights, radio, etc come on, then when the key is turned to start the engine it all goes off. Any ideas as to the culprit, as when it gets up and running again, you just know it will not be traceable, until it happens again.? Thanks in advance......

sounds to me like your car Battery is dead. when you turn on the accessories, there maybe enough current to drive them, but when you go to crank the car and start, the starter motor draws more current, and is unable too causing everything else to go off.

one other culprit could be the imobiliser, as when you crank the car, normally everything (all electrics) pause for a split second, if the imobilser is not letting you start the car, that can also cause the rest of the elecys to shut off.

so first, check the condition of the Battery, get it done properly if your not sure, not just voltage but current. Then next check out the imobiliser.

are there any indicators on the dash coming on or flashing?
