This noise must be going on for over 3 weeks now, and I use the car every day. It runs without any problem. I have "tested" the car on the road (pushing the rpms up to the "red lines") and I don't see any problem. I forgot to mention that the dealer has checked my ECU and everything was OK.

I have some friends that had made a serious downshift and have hit piston with valves (they have exceeded the 8.000 rpm when the the maximum is up to 6.800 for this engine) but when this happened they really knew it! The car was going like SH*T, the "check engine" light was permanently on, their exhaust emissions were dramatic, their sparkplugs were pitch black plus when they had their ECU checked the report was full of errors.

My point is that they/the engineers did not have any doubt about it.

sounds more like a tappet or worn cam lobe giving a larger gap on one valve giving the tap tap tap surely this should be under warranty

Based on that I'd say it wasn't the valves smacking off the pistons then.

Possibly the valve gap as mentioned above

could the problem be due to a doggy inlet manifold?

How hard is it to install a new inlet manifold?

Not too difficult.

Undo the jubilee clip holding the air hose to the throttle body and undo the bolts holding the throttle body to the intake (I'd just move it out of the way rather than removing the coolant hoses just so you don't end up making a mess/draining the coolant system)

3 Bolts and 2 nuts to release the manifold from the head and another into the block at the gearbox end. Should just pull out with a little encouragement. Reattachment is just the reverse of above.

Main point to watch out for is making sure nothing goes down the intake ports or into the replacement manifold. Getting a nut/bolt sucked in is a good way to wreck your engine in a hurry

Might explain the growl but still not sure about the tapping

i was told by a mechanic that on the corolla 1.6 and 1.4 vvti engines, A baffle becomes loose in the manifold which cause's them to vibrate. This can be heard when engine rev's are taken up toward's the higher rev range.

Anyone here a mechanic for toyota who could tell us if this really is a common problem?

Thanks

Hello All

Last year i was told by a mechanic at Rotherham Toyota the roughly the same thing about the manifold, al he said though, was that the " manifold tend to go on these cars, when i told them 'bout a vibrating noise when the revs die down on my 98 liftback. The noise is still there and the cars running fine, make of that what you will.! Any more info would be appreciated, as the noise is driving me nuts.

Cheers

Albi
