Difficult Starting From Cold

If you have a similar problem to that below here is a possible solution. After my own garage and a specialist diagnostic firm failing to find the fault I simply replaced the spark plugs and that cured the problem.

I have an intermittent fault where my Avensis is difficult to start but does eventually fire and then runs for a short time with a missfire then runs ok and continues to start until the car is left for a long period say overnight and then the problem is back but not always! The local garage can't find a fault - fuel and spark are fine - but cleaning and replacing the plugs seemed to clear the problem. Toyota weren't much help but thought using none Toyota plugs was the probable cause - the car has run fine on cheaper plugs for four years!!! Could it be a sensor playing up or am I looking at the engine magement unit? Any thoughts or advice would be graetly appreciated.

Try checking the butterfly vacuum valve at the end of the inlet manifold to see if the rod ia dislocated. Common fault on the 7A-FE engines which leads to high mpg but not sure if it'll cause poor starting. Worth a look though.
