Road Tyres

Can anyone tell me if there is any reason why I could not put normal road tyres on my Rav. I have no itention of going off road at all.

all road tyres, the ones you are thinking of, apart from racing tyres, have a 90% on road 10% off road anyway. there are a few threads onhere about tyres.

Just looked up this old post.....its to do with the load index number on the side of the tyre.....

"Here are some details about tyre markings:

Sidewall Markings

185/60 R 14 82 V

185 - Nominal section width expressed in millimeters.

60 - Ratio between nominal section Height and nominal section width. In practice this indicates the series of the tyre.

R - Radial construction tyre.

14 - Rim diameter, expressed in inches.

82 - Load index. Indicates the load carrying capacity per wheel.

V -Speed symbol. Tyre's maximum speed.

so your 235/60 R 16 100H have a load index of 100, and speed rating H of 130mph.

4x4 vehicles tend to be bigger/heavier, and therefore require a higher profile tyre (more tyre between rim and ground) with stronger carcass and sidewall construction to withstand off road lumps and bumps and sharp objects.

I am not an expert, but I would expect a "road" tyre designed for a 4x4 would still be different to the same manufacturers "road" tyre for a hatchback/saloon.

I personally would get advice from a tyre specialist before fitting anything not seen as standard for your Rav.

The specs above were borrowed from www.prielli.co.uk and probably also available from the other manufs. such as Dunlop.

If you want to put on road tyres on your rav.. go for it.. as long as it has the correct speed rating and load index.. it will be fine.. and you can get 4x4 specific tyres that are for on road use.. you don't need to get chunky tyres.

The load rating is the maximum weight the tyres can take.. multiply the number by the amount of tyres (4) and if that number is more than the weight of the car.. then they will be fine.

Pirelli scorpions (or something similar to that) is THE road suv tire...

As mentioned by the tyre fitter above, yes you can do it!

Pirelli scorpians are road tyres, but of the mud and snow type. In other words they are still designed for a bit of off road.

If you wanna get a better ride, go for proper on road tyres, in other words car tyres. You can get them in the correct size and load index rating. To top it off, proper car tyres are cheaper.
