Hi,

My Lucida has been fitted with new head and gasket, and new thermostat, but the radiator still boils water after about 10 miles. I am considering fitting a new radiator, can anyone tell me where I can get one from? I don't want a second hand / scrap one, must be new. Any ideas please?

eBay is your best bet but it sounds as if you have air in your system

Hi Taffy I don't know if this will help your overheating problem, but we were advised to replace the green coolant that the Lucida's normally come with red. It was actually the Toyota garage in Cardiff that told us this.

What a difference this made to our day to day running, epecially in the summer. Before we replaced it the engine temp' was often at the half way mark (and somtimes above!). Now it hardly moves from the bottom quarter of the guage. The only time it rises slightly is if we are towing the caravan going up a hill in the summer.

The coolant is pre-mixed and available from your local Toyoya dealership in 5 litre containers. It's not cheap and you'll need two 5 litre containers. I think we paid £13.00 per 5 litres!

Good luck

Cheapest option is to change the radiator cap first.

Had the same problem with my carina and a new radiator cap

did the trick.

Hi Dave

I doesn't really matter what coolant tou use as long as you're consistent. Toyota red is the best but do not top up with water as this over time will react with the coolant and slowly block your system which eventually will cause overheating.

As for your temp guage the normal running temperature is just below the half way mark and shouldn't fluctuate whatsoever. Have you checked if your thermostat is working ok.

Regards

Stef

Nonesense Toyota red is NOT best it is just like all these things a very good marketing ploy to suck in those without sufficient knowledge to know otherwise. A 50/50 mix of normal glycol ether coolant with DISTILLED water is all you need and costs a damn site less.

There are two reasons why the heads on these cars crack.

1. People add water to the Toyota Red that came in the cars when they were inported and as the other guy said this causes congealing in the system. SO a darn good reason NOT to use the stuff. Do you really want to be carrying a bottle of expensive stuff around in your boot should you ever need to top up. Or would you like to be able to use readily availble coolant or even water push comes to shove. Hopefully you have the intelligence to answer this question yourself.

2. The diesel engine fitted to the Lucida/Emina's was designed for a Corolla and was NEVER initially intended to be fitted in such a high temperature environment.

In Japan Toyota manufactures cars for the Toyota market. There cars have a useful lifespan of 8 - 10 years whereafter it becomes very expensive for people to get them through the Japanese equivalent of an MoT and so people buy new ones. Knowing this Toyota have no reason to engineer a car for THAT market that will last longer than this and as such the 3CT engine "would do the job". Bring them over here and they are now well over that useful time span and guess what.....yep the heat stress has taken its toll and whoopee the heads are cracking.

The Petrol Previa on the other hand had its engine designed for purpose and STRANGELY enough lasts and lasts and lasts. Gee I wonder why, and before anyone says ...yeah but they blow head gaskets.....please show me a car that doesn't. £50 for a head gasket set vs £500 (at minimum for a new head and this doesn't include bolts, gaskets etc) Hmmm....which should I choose
