The engine management light keeps coming on then going off (3 times since xmas) local dealer cannot find any problems at all.I have removed the top two O2 sensors, which were very sooty and was wondering if there is any way of testing them ? in view to replacing.Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Twice in two years I have had Toyota dealer replace censor. because Engine management light has appeared. unlike yours, the light stayed on. Of course each time they plug in the computor it resets the managment system and the light goes out. However if the censor is faulty it will come back on within a few miles. So far it has cost £200 each time they replaced one. Needless to say, Not Happy. :(

I've had exactly the same spent £200 & frequent visits to toyota dealers & still light on again. I spoke to my local 'back street' non Toyota garage & he thinks he can get patern sensors for 'a quarter' of the Toyota price & maybe knows someone who can decode & reset management computer. I'll give him a go & keep you posted.

Hi Alan, I also went to a small garage after recieving Toyota estimate. The guy was equipt with computor readout. but couldnt give me price so paid the £200 to Toyota ( for the second time}. However the Small garage owner was at least helpfull in telling me where, under the bonnet, the 4 censors where located. of course this doesn't tell me which one has failed. Anyway after the second £200 payment in two years I've got my fingers crossed that the light stays off.

 Barry61, I've Just bought my Avensis. Car was serviced just before I bought it and a O2 sensor was replaced then. In a week a second one has gone,(paid local Toyota garage £32 to tell me this.) They reckon that when one starts to go they are all on their way out, and yes they want £200 to replace it.

Can you describe where all four are on the engine? The one that's gone is code PO141 bank 1 sensor 2 if this helps anyone else out there.

On the 1AZ engine the sensors are located in the cat (maniverter) straight infront of you as you look at the engine. Two are upstream (top) and two are downstream (bottom) of the cat. They are fairly easy to change 22mm spanner or you can buy a special socket.(tightening torque 44Nm)

Hi STB, I think xrec2 has described the sensors location better than I could. I'd just like to add that although the Toyota may be noted for being evironment friendly, it seems like we owners are paying for it.

hi

had problem with mine and bought pc interface to resolve it myself, cheaper than Toyota dealer looking at it once and you cant diagnose modern cars without it. Then lots of researching.

po141 is the single heated o2 sensor after the cat, and shows that the internal heater is not working on that sensor. This will need replacing, search on eBay or internet, I got 3 for about £20 each, however you can get them up to about £90 each.

Sorry just noticed that yours is 2.0l so might be diferent to my 1.8l. But it should still be drivers side down stream of the cat sensor.

link below for supplier of OBDII interface and sensors. Hope it helps

Well thats it for me. Toyota and I have now fallen out for the last time Yesterday the engine management light came on again after another £200 spent on another sensor. Guessing this will make it £600. I will never buy another Toyota. :censor:

I have mine with the engine management light on for 4 months now. Cant we just leave it like that? what are the consequences? How important is it?

My light first came on about two and half years ago. Had one sensor replaced (£230) light out for abot 20 miles, then came on again. Went back to garage who said another sensor needed replacing (another £230) light out for a few days then back on again. Back to garage who said another sensor needed replacing. After reading some of the older threads I decided to leave the light on. The car still runs perfectly and has now passed 2 years of MOTs with the light still showing.

I- had fault code P0141 come up recently as well. Borrowed a mates OBD reader to read and reset the light, but it came back on a week later.

Toyota wanted a staggering £153.26 for the part. I found an alternative one for £78 from www.autobits.co.uk, fitted it and - touch wood - no problems since. In fact, I would say the car seems much smoother to drive, especially under acceleration. However, I think you should get it fixed, because if the O2 sensors aren't working correctly, it's possible that the car could be running too rich/lean and the maniverter (CATs) could be damaged?

Still, I'm a bit concerned why, after taking the car to Toyota, the light comes on shortly later? It makes me wonder if they're changing the right sensor??

Eg. My code was P0141 - Bank 1, Sensor 2 heater circuit failure. Location wise, that's pretty poor, but you would have thought Toyota would know where it is. Since I didn't, I checked the resistance of the heater circuit at the plugs beside the engine. Check across the black wires only, the blue and white wires are the signal wires. Three out of four sensors were 15ohm (+/- 1) the other was 3.5kOhm. It turned out to be the lower nearside sensor, 950mm long. P/N:89465-20760. The fault light didn't clear immediatly after I replaced it. Since I didn't have my mates reader to hand, I disconnected the negative lead for 10mins, then all was good. Hope that helps a bit. Makes you wonder if the garage just - "assumes" which sensor to replace, replaces it, clears the fault, then shortly later it's back again, because the fault is still present.

Hi All, new to TOC.

I have a 2002 Avensis D4D with same problem. Intermitting Engine management light coming on. I got a AUTEL GS500 code reader to check this out. Getting LINKING ERROR. It seems this unit works on Petrol models from 2001 on but only Diesel models from 2004 on?? Is there any way of getting this unit to communicate with 2002 D4D car? Software upgrade? If not, What device/unit do I need to communicate with D4D? Any help greatly appreciated.

According to thier website it should work ok, perhaps it's faulty? Have you tried it on another (newer) car?

My mates reader is like this one on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/U380-OBD2-KKL-OBD-2-...A1%7C240%3A1318

If the link doesn't work PM me.

It has some useful infomation towards the end, specifically it mentions that OBDII wasn't a EU requirement for diesels until 2004, so perhaps you need an OBD reader and not OBDII. The topic so far has been related to the 1.8 and 2.0 VVTI petrol engines I believe. Whats the engine code for yours?

Sorry I can't be any more helpful.

Yesterday I noticed my engine warning light was illuminated on my 53 Avensis T3x, panic panic, oh no £££ £££££££££ :(

Rang up a garage I have been using for a while, he agreed to look at it today.

collected today, he reported he cleared error by cleaning sensor in exhaust system and reset error to extinguish light, "keep an eye on it" he said as it will need a sensor change circa £120.

asked him how much I owed him, "dont worry about it" he said :yahoo::thumbsup:

what a star!

I am putting car in for 60k service next week (to him of course)

Cant imagine what local Toyota dealer would have charged me !! :o

top that!

ring toyota you will need a new cat and ecu and software upgrade this is a well known fault the sensor is reporting the error and not faulty.

TSB is out for this error the code and cel light can be cleared by taking the Battery of for 2 mins and reconnect.

check your oil consumption as well known problem on all vvti engines a design fault the oil can not cool the centre parts oil cooler and new engine for new avensis in 2009.
