Check you're oil.

My Avensis (1.8 vvti) started making a bad noise (something like a loose exhust is the closest I can think of). Check the oil which was right on the lowerst mark on the dip stick (no oil warning light on though!!). After topping up with oil and running for 5 mins, the noise disappeared!

You won't get a low oil warning light. It doesn't have a low oil level sensor. It has a low oil PRESSURE sensor which is a whole different kettle of fish. If you get that light on your engine is probably already wrecked

Really..well you learn something new.

So it sounds like that the oil warning light is as much use as a chocolate fire guard then

It's to give you time to get it on the hard shoulder before your engine seizes at 80mph in the fast lane of the motorway. It's dangerous because you'll slow rapidly and you'll never get the smell out of the seat fabric from the brown trouser moment :)
