Brake Pipe Bust/compensatator Replacement

Just stuck the celica in for an MOT and it's decided to cost me a packet, unless the garage is doing a fast one. :ffs: They've said the rear brake pipe has burst due to corrosion (applied brake and it went to the floor and ubiked out fluid everywhere), or so they say, was fine this morning on way to work.

admittidly he showed me the car up on the ramp and it looked a right !Removed! mess. They say the brake compensator will need replacing (£££) as it's too corroded in place to remove the old pipes and fit new ones to it, and due to the plastic covering on the pipe making the issue worse they may have to replace the whole pipe running from front to back as it may be corroded further up the line. Now being the lovely way Toyota have protected the pipe by sticking it behind the fuel tank, he reckons they'll have to remove the fuel tank (3hrs labour @£68p/hr just to remove that  ) to be able to do this.

he says that he's only ever seen 3 cars do this before in his life...now am I getting stiffed or am I a big wadge out of cash? Said renault 19's had this happen a few times. How much should these parts cost and how long should it take to fix?

:crybaby:

can't they simply put a fresh piece of pipe in between the bad part , it can be done

the burst is actually right near the point of entry into the compensator so they are unable to do this part of the pipe without replacing the compensator, dependant on how far the corrosion goes back will determine whether they have to remove the tank to fit the new piping to, if not that far back will get away with joining to existing pipe and not remove the tank.

Mate get it to another garage and get a second opinion first - maybe someone on here can recomend a decent garage in your area...

So let's get this straight, your car was fine until you left it with them, and all of a sudden the brake pipe magically fails whilst it's in their hands? I would be suspicous mate, very suspicous.

The brake pipes are sleeved in plastic so that they don't corrode. The last inch or two however, is exposed.

Makes you wonder whether they trapped it with a jack or some other clumsy mistake.

Could have just been very weak and burst under the pressure of them testing the brakes hard.

Either way there is no way you can prove they bust it, so it's got to be fixed. Get yourself the compensator from tcbparts or similar, then cut the corroded pipe back a bit and have a new pipe joined between the two. It should be possible with a flaring kit and a couple of unions, and half an hour or so - if it's all accessible
