Hi everyone,

Just bought a new router and it says it comes with a built in firewall. Does this mean I don't need a firewall on my PC as the router has one? or should I run norton firewall anyway?

I'd rather not run norton as it tends to slow my PC down which is rather irritating

any advice gratefully appreciated.

Sanj

If the hardware firewall is set up correctly and you only have software on your computer/network you trust NOT to "phone home" then you would be okay... But only okay.

Running a software firewall with outbound protection is always a good idea. I once caught MS Calc.exe dialing out!:o

If Norton is running slowly you could always dump it and try another one. I've always hated ZoneAlarm but the latest version runs fine on my laptop and it's free. I wouldn't trust it on it's own but my hardware firewall is solid so I use ZoneAlarm to stop "leaks".

As above ....... Norton applications are resource hungry - might be worth trying sygate firewall or zone alarm (Plus windows XP SP2 has it's own firewall *If enabled)

*Both are freeware

I'd say the firewall on the router is a must-have, whereas the software firewall on the PC is a nice-to-have if you are running windows.

Paul.
