I can not believe it is, i drove for 25 miles with a solid fuel light and the needle sitting on empty and still only got 52 litres in to the tank. Has it got like a massive reserve somewhere that it doesn't count on the fuel gauge? it's a 96 N plate UK spec ST202 car............

Is it the stock clock's?

You could always carry a gal and let it run out but you would be risking dirt in your fuel line. Is it getting to you or what? I've honestly never taken a mental note.

ha ha ha, that does look a bit of a spod question doesn't it! Only reason i care is I want to see how far i can push it without running out.................if i've been on a long trip i don't want to be bothered stopping for a splash and dash if it will make it home because i know that the fuel gauge is lying...............

When the fuel light comes on you are in the last percentage of the fuel tank and its fine to drive in the red zone as long as you fill up before it hits the pin as thats where things are a little hit and miss.

No there is no reserve as such but once the needle hits the resting pin at the bottom of empty you will probably only make it another 20miles or so.

The fuel gauge (like the speedo) is set a little quicker than what its actually on. So when the light comes on your not really in that red zone yet but they do that so its less likely your drive until you run out. Thats why if you fill the car right up to the top it doesnt stay there that long as the guage always reads less than is actually in there.

It is quite a bit, once the light comes on - I have never run out but I think I came close after leaving it for a week, as I drove into the petrol station it went a bit jerky and didn't want to drive slowly, even then though I only got around 55 litres in. My last car had a 60 litre tank and I would often get 62-63 litres in it.

I put £30 ish the other day on the red and it went to the top! Bad thing is it seems to drop quickly in certain places ie around half a tank. so just think it has a weird shape tank.

Shouldn`t run it that low anyway.

It doesn't really matter how low you run the tank on a modern car - although running completely dry won't do the fuel pump much good.

The guage/low level warning light are not too accurate, and err on the side of caution. Before I drained my tank, I did about 25 miles (so probably about a gallon) with the light on. And there was still another gallon and a half left in the tank!

You can probably do 60 to 100 miles with the fuel light on, but don't try it unless you've got a spare can in the boot.

I think it has a tapered tank so the 1st half tank seems to go on for ages but the rest goes down a lot quicker. I hardly ever fill it over 1/2 full - 60 litres of petrol weighs a fair bit (roughly 43 Kg I think!!!)

I guess we've all got our weird habits... I always run it as close to dry as I dare, as I'm logging every penny spent on the thing and like to be able to monitor how far each tankful gets me.

Agree with everything that's been said so far: loads o'miles left when you hit the red... gauge really isn't very accurate at all. My first 1/4 tank from full usually gets me 120 miles, the next gets me 80, the next gets me 100 and the last gets me 60-100 depending on how brave I'm feeling :)

Having run for the best part of a year on supermarket 95, I'm currently giving Optimax a whirl. Only one tankful so far, but interesting results... increased mileage meant the cost per mile was no more than supermarket 95. I'll report back when I've run enough tankfuls to draw a conclusion...

Cheers,

Tarby
