Broken Windscreen Wipers On A Carina Ii Xli Liftback (oct 1990)

Hi there

I'm experiencing the rather annoying hassle of broken windscreen wipers. The pushrod system has broken down. The electric motor works fine. The pushrod which is directly connected to the motor and which in turn drives the second pushrod which connects both wiperaxles has come off. It should be attached via a little metal ball in a white plastic socket. the plastic has worn I guess so when the motor pushes the socket pops off the ball.

It can be fixed easily by replacing the rods (entire mechanism) with a new unit. However, the cost involved is tremendous :( Toyota doesn't sell the little plastic sockets so you have to buy the whole sharade. In Holland this costs about EUR 200 which equals about PND 160 (and this for 2 aluminium rods and two axles !!).

The dealer says it's a fairly common problem with old Toyota's.

Does anyone have a useful (and cheap) tip or trick to repair this problem without having to buy a whole new set ?

Thanx a lot.

Greetz from the Netherlands.

Hi Markus,

There should be used car market around you. Instead of buying complete set, you can buy fairly used unit from a scrapped car of the same make as yours.

Do you the owners manual of your car?
