Old Or New Hilux Pickup? Opinions Please

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I recently bought an '87 4x4 2.4 diesel pickup, its done (suppossedly) 134K miles, its pretty beat up, its been resprayed gun metal grey at some point in its life, I've now bought myself a slightly newer 1990 MKIII, which is 2.2 petrol, done 140K miles, white, but isn't too far from what I'd describe as emaculate, both to drive and look at, considering its age anyway.

Well which would you keep, and why? I personally think the old beat up MKII with its tatty old interior and slow as a dead dog engine, has a lot more character than the MKIII, but on the flip side the MKIII feels safe, looks like it'll last a lot longer. What advanteges does one have over the other? I'm simply going to use the money from the truck I sell to 'improve' the other, bull bars, roll bars, biggers wheels, that type of thing...

Sorry for all the questions, I'd just like some experienced opinions.

Thanks

Rog

im sure if you ask the boys from top-gear they would recommend the indistructable mk11, personally i would go for the mk111 as i feel they look alot nicer done up with their newer looks, as you say yourself the mk111 would be a more road safer vehicle. i think you would spend alot more doing up the mk11 than the mk111 also. all down to what look your after. i am currently doing up a 1995 mk111, which i am very happy with.

happy pimping!!!!

Mechanically I didn't think there was a huge difference between mk2 and mk3. Is there really a big safety difference? I wouldn't have thought so. Personally I think the older truck looks better (and I have a mk2 myself), but I think you would save yourself a lot of trouble by sticking with the one that currently runs the best.

Thanks for the replies guys. I personally prefer the look of the older mkII, plus its been sprayed gun metal grey at some point, although now its pretty tatty, it looks a bit menacing I think. But the brakes feel really inferior compared to the mkIII, the mkIII is a much sounder truck, so I guess instead of spend X-amount of cash to get the mkII upto the same standard as the mkIII I might as well look to maybe getting the mkIII resprayed, as its currently white :(

Thanks again
