Upgrade My Brake Pads?

Just had my 1998 1.6 Corolla serviced and I'll need new pads and shoes in the next 5k miles or so. I now have a few questions.

1) Should I upgrade the front pads, I'm shortly getting her remapped to increase power.

2) Anyone recommend any uprated pads? I'll need something that bites well from cold as it's for road use only and unfortunately it's not that often that I get the chance to really lean on my brakes time after time (city living for you).

Any ideas guys? Cheers,

Phil.

Hi Phil,

When my discs and pads needed replacing I went for Tarox "Sport Japan" drilled and grooved front discs and Tarox "Strada" front pads. I'm well pleased with them - and so I should be - the were NOT cheap. £260 for the disks and £60 for the pads. Got them from Need For Speed in Sottishland - excellent service. Tarox do not list any discs / pads for the AE111 so I took advice from the guy who did my engine conversion. He reckoned the disks and pads are them same as the AE101 - and so they are.

You could get Black Diamond drilled and grooved disks from Fensport for £141 + carriage. If you have either the drilled OR grooved then it's £128 + carriage. Rears are more expensive again. They also have a choice of pads though I've read conflicting reports about EBC Green Stuff pads warping disks - definitely don't want that to happen.

Hope this helps mate

Cheers as ever John. I had a word with Fensport, they reckon I'll be fine with just uprated pads, can't see the afe putting out monster power even with a remap! My discs are ok at the moment. I've also heard some dodgy things about EBC on other websites. I think I have 3 choices

1) use standard pads (I find the standard system very reasonable in performance, good feel to the pedal too)

2) Buy Kevlar pads from Fensport.

3) Buy uprated ones such as the Tarox pads you mentioned.

Time to decide and look around!

Hello mate ive had ebc pads and discs on all my corolla gti`s in the past and i can not fault them! The whole thing about the pads losing the compound that holds them together? Was only as far as i can remember on scoobys?!I Maybe wrong but ive never had a problem with anyway and i know loads of people who swear by them!Including a nissan 200 sx turbo with over 250bhp!!!!

Hope this helps?

I just fitted EBC green stuff pads to my GTI and seems pretty good, i done 200 miles on them now and overall find they seem to stop me quicker and main thing i noticed is seem to bite better than standard pads when wet.

I am very impressed so far and will by again.

Phil.
