Gt4 St185 Will Not Start

:help: I have owned a 1992 UK ST185 GT4 for 3 years and never had a problem starting until now.

This is now my second car and has been stood on and off for a while last year. I used the car for a whole week and apart from a slight coolant leak was fine. The next day the car was turning over slower than usual and would not start.

i have checked and there is a spark at all of the plugs (i changed these anyway at the same time)

there is fuel when the filter is loosened and the ignition is on.

so there is a spark and fuel but still no starting and after 5 minutes of trying the plugs are soaked.

i have also changed the Battery and the alternator and by passed the wiring with jump leads but still the engine is turning over more slowly than usual.

i thing its safe to say that both of these problems are related seeing as they both happened at the same time.

if anyone has had the same / similar problem or thinks they might know what to check please let me know.

this is a great car and i would hate to have to unload it for peanuts after the thousands i've spent on it!!

thanks.

Hi Jason. Welcome to TOC. Check the ignitor. The ignitor is diagnosed in the sense that if everything else is functioning properly and the problem still exists, then it has to be the ignitor that is at fault. It`s basically a process of elimination that leads to replacing the ignitor. :(

Hi Daktari,

i have lots of spares of a GT4 i broke last year i'll try the ignitor off that. to be honest about a year ago the car had a missfire under load on the motor way which stored an error code in the ecu which was something to do with the ignitor. that time all that was needed was the conections and earthing cleaning up.

i have checked for error codes but none are stored but saying that the Battery has been replaced so that would clear them anyway!

i'll try the igniter and let you know how i get on. i guess if it was faulty it would give a week spark?

any ideas on the slower cranking?

thanks for the quick response much appreciated! i love this car but it it had to go to toyota for diagnosis / repairs would cost an arm and a leg.

Jason.

Check the engine earthing straps as well. There`s one from the gearbox which goes to the nearside chassis rail. It`s pretty well hidden. I had to do mine it was as crusty as you like. If thats not earthing properly it would explain the slow cranking and maybe have something to do with the non starting.:thumbsup:
