Keys

Just bought a 2003/52 Avensis 1.8 GS VVti (last of the old shape).

Can someone tell me how many keys you get with the car?

I have the black remote key and grey key. Is this correct - or am I missing another black remote one?

What is the grey key used for?

With my new 05, I got two black plips and a grey key, so you could be missing one! The grey key will start the car but cannot open a locked boot or glove compartment. Commonly called the valet key.

I'd get in touch with the seller re: any other keys, mainly for security's sakes.

HTH.

Cheers,

Jim

You should have 3 keys with the car. 1 grey and 2 black with remote operation. The grey key can be used when you put the car in for service. It allows the doors to be openned and the engine started without the alarm going off ( provided the car was locked with the key). The grey does not open the boot or the glove box and therefore gives you some measure of security.

As you will see from the forum, keys are very expensive £130 -200 and can generally only be made if you have a black master key. Lose your one and only black key and you may have to have to have the engine management system which includes the central locking etc replaced at a huge expense, about £1k a garage said. Get the 2nd master key from the vender if you can. There are other postings relating to lost keys and some info on getting new ones in this forum somewhere.

Regards

Bill.

I don`t think you should have three keys.

For the year of your car, I think you will have a black alarm key & a valet key.

It`s very adviseable to buy another black alarm key even though I recently did this and it cost me about £130 !

Yes he should have THREE keys as has been said above.

Mine is a 2001 facelift model (last of the old shape) and came with the two black remote keys plus the valet key.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I do not have the little metal tag with the key number either, so will a main dealer just look the car up by using the chassis no?

On a last note - does anyone know who I should go to for this black remote key (main dealer/specialist) please?

Thanks.

I had my local dealer quote me and he said £140 for the key and another £40 to program it - so I am looking at £180!!

Personally I think this is way too dear - does anyone have another dealer who does them cheap?

Thanks in advance,
