Intercooler On St185 Restrictive For Uprated Boost?

Hiya,

My 1991 Celica GT4 (UK spec) is running 17psi boost, but im worried that the original intercooler is some what restrictive and not upto the job?

When I floor it, and the boost kicks in I get a 'wooshing' noise, which all I can think of is the sound of the air being forced through the smalish intercooler, and I get the feeling that top end power is being restricted. It picks up great from low/mid but not much in the top end of the rev range.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Lawrence

17PSI is asking for trouble if your running stock. Are you running any other mods? 17 psi will be maxing out the injectors and fuel pump in the upper rev range. It`s probably this thats causing the feeling of power loss. If you`ve no other mods you ought to consider turning the boost down a bit. Try turning it down to somewhere between 12 & 14 psi. It`s more engine friendly. The top mount air/air I/C is supposed to support upto 300BHP but i reckon thats a tad optimistic. A good FMIC will allow increased airflow and stop the dreaded heatsoak associated with top mounts.

I bought the car already modded, but can confirm it has a cat bypass, superchip, custom induction kit, stainless exhaust system, 1.6mm Steel Race spec head gasket.

I will need to go through all the receipts to see if any other mods have been carried out. If nothing else has been changed then what mods would you recomment to get top end power back?

Bigger injectors? Front mount Intercooler?

Would something like this be sufficient?:

That I/C looks OK. It all depends what sort of power you really want. It`s not going to be cheap, Thats gauranteed with a Four  But you will need bigger injectors, Upgraded fuel pump, and a ECU upgrade of some description to control the fueling.

Best thing you can do is pop over to gt4oc and browse the forums. Use the search function and you will very soon have a wish list to be proud of.
