Ridiculous Radio Problem

The radio on our Sept 2001 Yaris stopped working. The local dealer has had a look and quoted £1,200+ inc VAT to fix it...

Anyone here had the same problem? Does that sound like a ridiculous amount of money to fix this or I am I just out of touch?

I see that several people have fitted after market radios. BUT I'd like to know why the radio stopped working in the first place - anyone recommend a good place to get it checked out and a new one fitted in the Reading area?

check fuses wiring ect.

It could have just decided to pack up.

£1200

that's just a little to expensive, even though i'm sure they cost over £500 brand new

for about £150 you could have an aftermarket one, with everything (surround, wiring loom, ect)

Just been quoted £900 to fit new Radio/CD in my three and a half year old Yaris SR (Toyota Bristol). They also say they can send it away to see if it can be repaired. Mine has a fault whereby it cuts out once a minute for a couple of seconds on both the radio and CD. If I was quoted £900 I wonder why you were quoted £1200. They should have seen if yours could be repaired as apparently they have a place that Toyota use for such repairs. Maybe my quote didn't include VAT. Anyway, what a rip off!

Yeah definately dont bother with toyota as every now and then there on eBay and go for 100 odd. You can just replace the whole unit yourself with the guides on the how to's section of this forum without any problems! Even £900 is stupid as you look at aftermarket stereos and you can get an all singing all dancing one for £900 fitted EASILY. Nowadays if you just want it as a cd player and radio tuner you can buy a headunit for £50 then get it fitted with fascia so all looking nice for a total of £90!

Dont let toyota rob you blind!

Those prices are ridiculous  !

I would get on to trading standards

Try looking in the yellow pages for radio repairs and give them a call  !

Hopefully it's just a fuse etc - If not get a different HU fitted.

That's a silly price! For around four times that amount you could replace the entire car.

Try a reputable independent garage and see what they can do for you.

Avoid Mr T .. Get one of us local lads to have a look.

Aftermarket would be best .. can get an MP3 unit all singing/dancing for £200 these days, and then 30 mins fitting tops ..

Thanks all, as I thought. Apparently £500 for the display, £200 for the radio/CD, plus labour and VAT. So thanks but no thanks.

The nice receptionist also gave us the number of a local chap who might be interested in looking at it so I'll be following that up. Bibbs - I see you are local too, I'll PM you.

Thanks again.....

If you go aftermarket, you'll not have the display doing anything radio related.

I work just round the corner from Reading Octagon, but live out Tilehurst way.

I can have a quick look on the net, get your dash apart and look for loose wires before you fork out for a new unit.
