How many miles has the car done and when was the cambelt last changed?

What will that tell you??? Im sure he would know if the cambelt had gone in 4th gear!

3sge is non interference .

test for ecu error codes . and take it from there

if the cam belt has snapped , turning the engine will sound rapid and washing machine sounding like - lol .

take off the oil filler cap , have someone crank it over and look to see if the cam shafts are turning - if they are the belt is fine . provided you can see them that is

check for a spark , the ignitor could of failed , if its fuel i think it would of ran rough leading up to total fuel blockage , may even be a blown ecu or efi fuse

1. check fault codes

2. check cam belt (take out 2 bolts pull the cover back)

3. check for spark

4. check for fuel

That's the order I would check things anyway.

I think that the only sensor that would cause total cut out of the engine like that would be the crank angle position sensor (I think it's in the dizzy on your engine).

So if the cam belt has snapped it shouldn't of effected any thin else in the engine being non interferance?

It appears not, from what other people have said when it's happened to them. I'm sure there's info on checking fault codes on here somewhere - check the pinned topics or do a search.

People at Toyota claim the engine is a non interference unit, but most independent mechanics use a data book made by AUTODATA ,andthe book claims most engines on the road will do damage, (they just like to cover themselves) , the down side of this is some unscrupulous mechanics use this data as a green light to rip customers off.

Get you mechanic to put a new belt on the car and see what happens

Yep - Autodata classes it as potentially an interference engine, but over the last year or so there has been a few people on here with snapped cam belts and I think they all got away with it. Either fit a belt yourself or get one fitted and see what happens :yes:

There's every chance that your engine is not damaged at all. A few people on here have suffered cambelt failures, but in every case the engine internals have been fine.

Try fitting a new belt see what happens. If it is just the belt it would be highly advisable to replace the tensioner device as that is the most likely cause of your problems.

Ok thanks for that guys :)

don't know if its any help, but i found this on a google search, it doesn't seem to list the uk spec celica engine but what i could make out, all the celica engines seem to be non intereference, also did search on google and a lot of people say that the 3sge engine is non interference and shouldn't get damaged if the belt has broken

Click below you will need adobe acrobat to read it though

  • 3 weeks later...

Just an update what happened, A screw came loose from one of the covers that surround the cam belt got caught up in all the sprokets and cogs, basically grinded the grooves of the lower sproket and caused the cam belt to rip. It didn't fully snap just shreaded it, My mechanic's never seen somethin like it got off lightly really just replaced the bottom sproket and tensioner. Replaced the cam belt started it and its as good as new Very happy to have her back :D

My comment 'What will that tell you?' was in responce to your question 'how many miles has your car done?'! Mileage bears no indication of when a cambelt change has been done!!!:lol:

What it also tells me, is that IanGT does not know how to tell when his cambelt has gone! Sorry I credited him with the intelligence I am used to being surrounded by! Sorry IanGT that was a result of several dirty Irish ales and my usual supply of Stella!! no offence intended mate! same to you adam!

Sotal your a right wimp, like one of the small guys who stands behind the ig guy mouthin' off!!

Just so you know I dont pretend to know everything about the mechanical side of cars. All I know is the basics but I get my hands dirty every now and again, and think I know enough to do the things Im prepared to do, but for the rest, I get paid enough to let someone else do them. Like I've said Im lazy, thinks its the bud!! Zaps all motivation!
