2001 Avensis Rear Wipe Problem

I've been having a problem with the rear wiper on my 2001 Avensis 1.8 VVTi Hatchback. It has been perfectly fine until recently but I encountered an intermittent fault which meant that during a long drive the rear wiper would begin to switch itself on at random intervals (anything from 2 -10 seconds), even if the wiper had never been turned on at any point that day.

I figured it may be a faulty switch, so I took it into my local main dealer who informed me that the motor needed replacing, asking £250 including fitting (it only looks like a 10 minute job, even for an inexperienced bod like me).

After a quick look here I see that other people have listed many faults with their rear wiper motors, though I didn't find an exact match for my symptoms. I'm unwilling to pay £170+ for a new motor, which leaves me two options:

1) Try and get a motor from a breakers yard and fit it myself (I got a quote of around £50 including postage), the process looks simple enough.

2) Follow the tutorial I found around here to strip down the existing motor and see I can fix the problem (bearing in mind I know very little about cars).

I've three simple questions (though the answers may be a little more difficult):

1) Does the diagnosis sound reasonable, given the problems others have had with their rear wiper motors? I wouldn't want to focus on the motor just to find out it was a faulty switch, cable or connector after all.

2) Could stripping down the motor, cleaning the contacts (as in the "stuck wiper" tutorial) and applying WD40 to the connectors fix the problem?

3) If I got a reclaimed part, would it be just as likely to fail as the one I already have? I wouldn't want to buy a 2nd hand motor just to hit the same problem again 6 months down the line.

Thanks in advance.

Iain.
