Few Basic Questions

I don't know if anyone has the patience to answer such basic stuff but I've just bought a 1996 Toyota Carina auto, estate, one owner full service history but no owners manual so I have a few dumb questions if anyone has the time to answer them.

On the gear stick is a tiny button that seems to affect the gear change in some way and a small orange light comes on in the dash display when the button is in the out position, what is it? Similarly next to the gear stick and lying horizontally is an inch long lozenge shaped switch which when depressed also seems to affect the gear change and kick down, perhaps economy mode, anyway a green light comes on in the dash display when it's depressed, what's this button for?

Final questions concern the heating and ventilation, having only just got the car it all seems to work fine but seems to have quite a few options , any suggestions for a good basic setting that heats the driver and clears screens and windows of condensation. On the heating ventilation system there is a logo of a car with a left/right lever below it , in the logo there is a line indicating air flow I presume, what is that?

Final, final question , what's the recommended trye pressures?

Thanks in advance.

A guess -

The air flow indication logo sounds like a choice of whether you have fresh air from outside or recirculated air from inside the car only.

Recirculated air will warm up quicker but condense more.

Hopefully someone will answer your other points.

Oh and welcome to the club !

Hi thebones

The switch on the side of the gear selector is Overdrive, when the dash light is Off, overdrive is working.

The slider switch is for the gearbox, Normal or Power, Power holds the revs longer in each gear before changing up. Uses more fuel. Dash light off is Normal mode.

Snow button should be used when driving on snow, it pulls away in 2nd and reduces wheel spin.

I hope that this helps.

If you need any further help, then place a post.

Thankd guys, everything is as you say , now it makes sense. I don't appear to have a 'snow button', all I have are the overdrive button and to the right of the gearstick and lying horizontally a lozenge shaped button which I suspect is a button that gives the transmission a better kick down , at least it feels like that, any pointers on tyre pressures 25-30 psi sound about right?
