1997 Colorado Prado Front Wheel Bearings

Hello,

at the moment I am attempting to service the front wheel bearings on my Prado LC, I have got the lockers off and removed the nuts and conical washers of the next bit, removed the brake disk and removed the snapring of the end of the driveshaft.

Now instead of a locking nut (a la surf) there is a brass, posibly locking nut with notches in it. I assume there is a Toyota tool for removing this and I have had a liitle bash at it with hammer and punch. I have moved it a few revolutions anti-clockwise but it doesnt seem to be un-doing???

Anyone know if I am going about this the right way?

Many thanks

Dave

I think i know the bit you are talking about as i had the same problem with my surf when i had to change my D/S boot.

If were on about the same bit there should be a bolt inside there that you undo and the cone shape washer should come off and the D/S then just slides out.

From the pic it does look identical to a surf one but its hard to tell with a front veiw is it possible you could take a pic of it from the side?

As it does look like you have the cone bit that looks like its possibly stuck and the bolt seems to be missing if you could post a side veiw i should it my give me a better idea and i'll might be able to direct you further and see if we cant get this problem sorted

Looking at it again i think i can see what you may have to do.

it looks like that brass washer is the locking device (but you probably already know this) it is highly possible this is a part that must be replaced everytime you have to take out the drive shaft as im betting you

1) have to split the brass collar with a chisel and split it off thus releasing the driveshaft or

2) as the driveshaft is made of a much harder metal than the brass you put a bit of wood on the end of the driveshaft and get a big hammer and swing at it and as brass is a soft metal it will give and again the driveshaft is released.

Then when reffiting you get a new collar and then hit it with a punch in 3-4 places to spread the brass and lock the driveshaft in place.

and good luck
