Starting Problems

I have a -98 1.8 avensis touring, 90000 miles. Once in a while (like every 30 time) the engine won´t start directely when I turn the starting key. The starter engine will rotate like one turn, then it stops. If I release the key and try again it starts directely. Also if I keep the starter key in starting poition the starter engine will be dead, quiet, for 1.5 seconds and then it will move again and the engine starts. Happends both when warm and cold engine.

Anyone had anything similar?? Any suggestions what fault it might be, and the expense of fixing it, and the risk that the car one day won´t start at all?

Hi Johan,

Had the problem recently on my 1998 1975cc Avensis GS. Garage first installed a new starter motor. Didn't cure it. Then after reading the Toyota club forum I suggested that it was the ignition set behind the steering wheel. There's a thread in the forum if you can find it. It solved the problem.

I now even found that a Mr Roger had done a manual how to cure the issue yourself. Great, didn´t seem that difficult either./Johan
