Stiff Gear Changes?

Hi

Once i got my second hand yaris, i thought there was a problem with the first gear. However, after talking to a few people i soon sorted the problem.

If i was slowing right down and tried to put it into first gear, it would literally lock and not go in, so i dropped it into second. It wont let you go into first if the cars still moving me thinks!

As the clutch is so soft I think sometimes we just apply less pressure on the clutch and that may explain problems with the other gears!

Hope this helps.

I had this problem on my wife's Yaris and I cured it by greasing the selecter rods on the top of the gearbox, where the cables move the pivots.

I found that corrosion builds up on the rods therefore making the gearchange very obstructive.

Have a look, it's the cheapest option.

i have a similar problem when changing down to 2nd and more expecially going into 1st if i am going anywhere above like 3mph, if im in traffic and change down from 2nd to first I need to press the brake to come to an almost complete stop before i can move the gear stick into 1st.

If you look where the gear change cables are on the top of the gearbox, near the Battery, and get someone to sit in the car and change gear, you will see two rods that move in and out when the lever is moved.

They are quite short but you can see and feel them move. I just put some LM grease on my finger and smeared it all around the rods.

After doing this use the gear lever to select all the gears while stationary[press the clutch in] and you should be able to feel the difference.

Just regrease when needed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for this tip guys. I think my problem may have been caused by the cold weather because since I posted the gear changes are not stiff anymore, but will try greasing those cables if the problem returns!

My Warranty was up this week so I raised the matter with my main dealership who explained that it was a characteristic of Yaris gearbox that in the cold weather we have been having, the gears will not select smoothly until warm.

It seems fine after a couple of miles but that initial selection can be diifficult.

Another tale of "characteristics..."

My local dealer said the other week, my rattly windows were a "characterisitic" of the Yaris.

How many people here have rattly windows?

Well, I don't anymore, cause this time round, they actually took a look inside the door panels, and replaced the runners!

Don't believe everything they say....
