ok i have a celica GT, today in the snow i went down a hill in 1st in a straight like very slowly, well until the car started to rear into the ditch. I ended up in the ditch :( would 4 wheel drive have helped or not?

cheers

were you braking .????????

4wd is better but not a miracle cure in the snow and ice.

ABS helps alot too

4wd can't change the laws of physics .. it'll get traction down better, but if there is NO traction, you'll not get anywhere no matter what your in.

nope didnt brake, reason was i waited at the top until all the people infront had gone so i didnt have to brake. then some idiot starts coming at me from behind. because i nearly hit the person infront of me at the top of the hill as they stopped dead i set off. just glided into the side :( just missed the wall by an inch or so. had to dig myself out with an ice scrapper i had just put in the car that morning. ive had it since november :) damn lucky really. annoying thing was it got through the real hard parts of that road, that was the last difficult part before i got into the town :ffs:

yeah i thought that would be case, just thought i might be missing something that the GT4 might of had such as wings and harrier jump jet style boosters :) ah well. cheers

my thoughts are that 4 wheel drive is beneficial when accelerating and going round corners... but not breaking as all cars have.... well.... 4 wheel braking :blushing:

And very little benefit in the snow unless you got tractor tyres fitted. :D

all cars do have 4 wheel breaking but mrfil13 didn't break, one advantage of 4WD in that sort of situation is that all 4 wheels are under control, so if you knew how to drive 4WD in the snow then you could have avoided it POSSIBLY, but then if the road slopped to the side then you'd still have ended up in the ditch unless you were willing to drive the car sideways  along the road. the joys of owning a rally slag B)

lol, didnt really fancy trying to drive like a ralley driver. was gutted as i missed my train by 1 minute after risking 20 mile snow journey, grr. i hate snow. think if i get an MR2 im going to get snow chains, dont fancy being cought out like that again. the next non driver that says they like snow will get a slap :)
