Seriously Considering Getting A Gt4... Questions

Hi everyone, new to this forum..

But really been thinking about this, and am considering a GT4, gen 6. My main questions are:

- Is it possible to get similar MPG as the normal ST202 GT by keeping speed down and not using boost

- Is the insurance group the same as a GT ST202?

- Is the engine expensive to maintain

- If something goes wrong, are parts much more expensive than GT?

Sometimes I think I'm a bit mad considering a GT4... but life is short, eh? Why not give it a whirl...

Hi

Welcome to TOC

-It is possible to get similar mpg as the GT. But you wont as GT4's are too tempting to put your foot down

-Insurance group is not the same as a GT, its 2 groups higher (17of20)

-Engine very reliable but suspension is expensive and so is replacing clutch (e.g. when lower arm and fig of 8 goes on front suspension it will cost you over £700 to repair both sides)

-Parts are more expensive than GT (depending on part)

How old are you... as insurance will sting you if your under 21?

Thanks for the info mate. I'm 25 and living in ireland - I've got to ring up tomorrow to get a quote!

So basically if you want to, it's possible to get good fuel economy? I ask this because I find that in general (esp. on our bad roads) I drive quite normally and not that fast, but every now and again I let rip when it's safe.

Is it hard to check the lower front arm and figure of eight when buying one of these beasts, and how do you know ifit's on the way out?

Yes mpg is not so bad if you dont boot it all the time, fairly similar to the GT.

For the suspension, ask if it has been replaced. Apparently It goes at around 60k miles, but mine went on the left at 50k miles. Signs of the parts being on their way is knocking noise under harsh accelerating/braking and driving over bumps... just listen out carefully.

Overall dont let this put you off... great reliable car and sooooo much fun! (+you can scare passengers easily :P )

I know there are many owners who have had no problems at all after owning for over 2 years ;)

Thanks mate..

Yeah, I think you've got me sold on getting one of these things. Just depends on insurance now really...

As for MPG, I know the GT is (courtesy of CelicaClub.co.uk):

Urban 23 mpg,

Extra Urban 38.7 mpg,

Combined 30.0 mpg

Anyone have any figures for GT4?

Yup.. I'm sure they are loads of fun. I've taken a spin in an Evo III recently and the 4WD bug has hit me hard. No going back now eh...

Constant 75mph - 34.4 mpg

Celica GT4

Urban - 24.4 mpg

Constant 56mph - 37.7 mpg

Constant 75mph - 30.1 mpg

Thanks Jones, that really helps.

The MPG isn't awfully bad I guess, and you probably wouldn't notice a huge difference from the GT if you were taking it nice and slowly!

The trouble is taking it slowly ;)

i can confirm the 'Constant 56mph - 45.6 mpg' on the GT as i had to drive 110 miles with the damn space saver wheel on. 30.1 for the GT4 at 75 sounds good, again on the gt i can get around 34 at 80mph on long distance motorway drives (with my girlfreind in the car so no heavy foot action :) ) But you want the GT4 so expect the figures to go much lower with a heavy foot :)

Are those figures similar to what a MR2 turbo would be like, or would the MR2 be abit more efficient in that there is less power loss due to 2 wheels vs 4. Cheers

Before I got the company car I was using the 205 for commutting about 60 miles a day half motorway and half a-roads, then let the foot drop at the weekend. Used to get around 400 miles to the tank which was working out at 30mpg average. Now I only drive the four for fun at the weekend and get about 250 to the tank....which I don't even want to know what the mpg is. :crybaby:

Best I've got was 38mpg on a long motorway run at a constant 70mph.

The worse thing about sing the 205 for commutting was that every time you got a stretch of clear road it starts taunting you, so you think it won't hurt if I accelerate a little. Then you start coming on boost and that taunting turns into a scream of "PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN YOU BIG WUSH!!!!"....

it's not just the 205 mate, i know that feeling too well from the 185, i think it's just the GT-Four, it truely is a car that has the devil inside :robot:
