Speedometer Is On Speed!

Hi guys my gf's Yaris is registering about 40mph faster than we are actually going!

She has a tomtom so we can keep track of the speed that way but obviously it aint as accurate!

Any ideas how much this would be to fix or if there is a way to 'reset' it?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like it's been switched to kilometre mode. I think there's a "mode" button near the speedo that toggles through Mph, Kph, display brightness etc.

Have done it myself, it freaks you out!

I did that once after filling up with petrol. I pressed the "trip" button to reset the trip mile counter thingy and somehow changed to km/ph. I looked at the speedo and it said I was doing 126! Scared me a bit until I realised that my 1.0 wouldn't do 126 heheh

Yeah it will be the mode button pressed. My mates mum was thinkin her 1 litre was hugely powered when she bought it new but never felt you were going the speed :P

Oh dear....

Perhaps a pair of spectacles and a thorough reading of the vehicle's user manual wouldn't go amiss.... :P ;)

Not entirely - if I'm building a cupboard, sod the instructions, but if I'm going to go flying round our roads with a tonner of metal around me, I'd prfer to know how the controls work....

Here Here ..... Im shocked :eek:

You don't need to read the whole manual but the Basics would be a start

If you don't know your car and how the basics operate - you shouldn't be behind the wheel IMHO

I sat and laughed at the question when I read it yestaerday but was driving home last night thinking "this is awfully slow for 40" before realising I'd knocked the button earlier in the day...

Its easily done and as I'm on my 3rd Yaris I really should know by now...

I still don't know how the hell people make this mistake. If you don't know your speed by judgement, or you don't know your car then you shouldn't be driving. No questions.

Fair enough if you've had a long day... blah-de-blah then a 10sec mistake and realisation is excusable... but getting worried that your car is broken or being just dumbfounded when driving is totally unexcusable.

If you can't do the most simple thing of reading the speedo, then how can you be capable of negotiating roundabouts, motorways, rush-hour etc etc?? Poor driving is the enemy of our roads, it's not excessive speed, it's not conditions, it's not a gender/race thing that causes accidents... it's just poor drivers who have poor skills and bad judgement. Iv said this before, so don't get upset people... you all know it's tru, im just the one who says it... know your car and your driving skills before you inflict them onto the public roads.

(Im not saying im an angel behind the wheel, far from it, nor am i saying im a good driver, but I know my car, I know my limits and I know bad driving when I see it and im angry with myself if I make mistakes... a car is a deadly weapon... more deadly than any gun or explosive device... use with caution...!!)

Took me a bit longer than it should've done to realise but we all make mistakes!

Oi! Cheeky young whippersnappers. You two can both expect a visit from PoTOC (if any of us old geezers can get around to forming it! :wheelchair: ).

I did that today (needed sidelights but didn't want my dash display dimmed and pressed it once too often) and wondered why I was trying to do 47 in traffic. Difference was (Alan :P ) I realised immediately and reset it to mph to show my true speed...

29mph.

Excellently put, I agree 100% (except for the bit about cars being more deadly than any explosive, but that's a different matter)

If anyone can say that they never make a driving mistake then they need a serious reality check!

It can be anything from being a bit too hesitant at a roundabout, changing lanes a bit too close to someone else etc etc etc.....

I've never made a driving mistake - other people, road signs, tarmac, and nature. they ALL make driving mistakes, which cause problems for me...

Weird, same thing happens to me too - those darn road signs and nature! Wish they'd learn how to drive....:lol:

Now, I aint saying I'm 100% perfect.... I've just never gotten my speedo mixed up, but hey, it could happen one day, I'm not tempting KPH fate!

He knows it! :lol::lol:

Sorry folks... may have been a tad OTT with the explanation... but it's still true... just said in a Simon Cowell sort of way!

Yes, we all mistakes and that's forgivable... im no angel like I said... had one crash, killed a guys wing-mirror (technically a buses fault, but iv no shame in admitting a mistake) and iv been pulled by the police 4 times for 'driving a bit enthusistically there mate' - I even accidentally sort of raced an unmarked 5-0, but that's not a story for this nice forum! (never charged with anything though... the charm must work on some of them!!!:lol: )

But... i do have a big pet-peeve... people who don't know their cars! Iv been in cars with people who didn't know their main-beam lights were on, people who had no lights on, people who couldn't work the heater properly... the list goes on.... if they can't do these simple things then they shouldn't be driving!

It's this behaviour and poor driving which is most closely linked to middle-lane hoggers, hesitant people and people who just wander around lanes for no reason at 2mph... sooooo annoying and very dangerous!

Oh... one more thing... vehicles ARE the most dangerous thing on earth as they have killed more people, wildlife and plantlife than any other device in human history. So the statistics say anyway!
