How do - I'm a newbie. I have just swapped my MR2 Rev1 for a Celica 140 on a 53 plate.

handling wise it's waaaaaay more fun, and a whole lot less scary!

performance wise, I don't feel very fast cos the MR2 was all noise and it felt reallyt quick - even if it wasn't really.

SO help me out. Give me some idea of some performance mods, and most importantly costs!

I also want to try to keep the fuel economy of poss!

Pix coming soon!

Blitz do a supercharger kit, I believe. Other than that, sell it and get a 190. :!Removed!:

dont know prices but...

-induction kit

-exhaust

-ecu remap

-Supercharger

But you cant normally gain power and not lose mpg

-induction kit. £100 - £300, depending on what you buy. Go for a CAI Blitz if you can.

-exhaust. £1000ish, new manifold, de-cat pipe, and TRD Backbox. If you don't wanna go all in, the TRD Backbox is £500. Or go custom with a PowerFlow.

-ecu remap. £??? no idea how much, but have a look at the link to Thor Racing at the top of every page in this forum.

-Supercharger. £4500ish for the Blitz, before fitting.

That would probably get you to about 190bhp, maybe a little higher. You will definately see the fuel consumption go up as well.

Expensive isn't it? ;)

Should've bought yourself a 190! ;)

I would have bought one rather than spending all that cash to make it just as fast. But take out the supercharger option and you can make it feel faster for a relatively small amount. Induction kit first as that gets you more responce and increases MPG(slightly), plus it will give you the noise your missing from the MR2.

The 190's major power difference is 6k RPM and above. If you go for the nice little shopping list above, then you get increased power through out the entire rev range, making the modded 140 better by a long way! I just wish I could justify the costs of the stuff I listed earlier...

You'll defiantely see some difference without the supercharger (making it a much cheaper shopping list!), especially if you get a new centre pipe without the Cat. You just have the hassle of swoping it out for a slightly more legal one at MOT time, and hope the police don't get interested in it... You might be able to find a Sports Cat, which will let things flow more easily, yet could still keep you legal. I've never looked in to it though, so don't know for definate. Reckon you can probably get it to about 160BHP without spending silly money.

You can also Turbo the VVTi engines. Costs about £5k for a decent setup, fitted.

Don't really know much about the Gen 7, but i thought the Blitz Supercharger was designed only for the VVTLI T-Sport 190?

I can see where Defaintfrog is coming from.........yes, the main difference with the 190 is that the power is toppy and it's a shame there isn't more midrange. However, why would anyone want to drive around getting worried about the police taking interest in their motor and having all the hassle of swapping cats at MOT time?

The 190 has got more torque than the 140 lower in the rev range, making it everso slightly more useable. But as you say, without spending an awful lot of money on it, there's not much you can do to make it quicker.

I'm also not sure that an induction kit does improve things at all given it gets VERY warm under that bonnet. You might get noise, but I doubt if it = performance.

Cold Air fed Induction will give a performance benefit. At high speed, a standard induction kit may give more performance but I doubt it would be noticable.

Cheapest and probably best way forwards is a decent panel filter, and possibly remove the butterfly valve thingy at the front of the stock airbox. That way you're getting a much free-er air flow in a nice heat protected box, and a cold air feed from the front of your bumper. And you can probably get away with out declaring it to insurers... Its just an air filter after all! ;)

Cheers guys!

Am I wading in to a 190 vs 140 rivalry here like the MR2 turbo vs n/a argument I blundered in to?!!

I appreciate that it is going to lose some mpg - I just don't want to go down to 'Bishi Evo thirst!

Supercharger or turbo sound pricey - I think I'll do the induction and new exhaust. Also check the ecu.

Haven't got any money right now, but xmas is coming really soon!

Honest'y tho Ihave just taken it for a proper drive round the fens in norfolk and had more chance ot drive it properly - like not commuting. Learning how to do it sure helps - I have discovered I was using 5 instead of 3 to accelerate! Now it's a missile! Just gotta adapt my style to the way it works and go.

The MR2 had to be at the right speed to make the corner, then power out. With this you just fly in, flick the wheel and power out - it's immense!

How easily I forget... Yep, it take a little bit of learning how to drive it as well! :)

If you're not doing already, pop some high octane fuel in (well, higher than 95RON), you'll definately notice a difference in the lower end responses. I've noticed the most difference with Optimax, but its worth experimenting.

Don't worry about the 140Vs190 arguments - it is really nothing more than friendly banter round here... Yeah, the 190 may be a faster car, but everyone here knows the 140 is superior.... hehehehehhe  :P

By adding a forced induction kit you will increase your MPG. Take a look at the k&n site for an explanation, more low down responce/pick up means that less rpm are used.

Hi

don't know if you guys/girls already know this, but i read somewhere that Tesco has the highest ron rating on there super unleaded, its supposed to be 99RON it was in one of the car magazines recently, there was a whole article about it, they were comparing the ratings to Shell optimax etc and tesco's came out the best.

Don't know if this helps anyone

I have had 4 cars fitted with them and all of them proved just as economical. I know what you mean as I thought that, but I found it was no different even when giving it hard acceleration but when tootling round town it was noticable that it used less. Panel Filters are what I consider a waste of time, as they offer little noticable improvement, but then again thats just my opinion.
