Hi Lux 1995 Gear Box Prob

i have a toyota hilux surf its a 3l TD the problem is a couple of days ago the gear box started producing problems at first it slipped out of gear once,but was fine.The next day when i started it the gearbox was making a crunching noise when the car moved,i have been trying for 2 days taking the gearbox out as a few people suspect its the clutch that has gone.This is been very tricky,i phoned a garage and they said they would do it for £1600 and the job will involve lifting the engine out.I have been trying to get the gearbox out but there is 2 bolts that are awkward to get and only way to loosing them is to lift engine forward and menover the gearbox out.

Is there a simpler way to get this out?
