Yo Scott,

Whats wrong with your old engine?

It may be repairable, and if not I might be interested in it for parts.

Its guzzling oil at a horrendous rate, with huge repair bills quoted. I'll give you first option when I get a replacement mate.

Nice one, it gives me a feeling of warmth walking in my workshop seeing spare cylinder heads and blocks knocking about. If its eating oil its either a) leaking B) burning

if A) you should have pools under where you park your car and a dirty dirty sump

if B) probally valve stem oil seals or piston rings

Valve stem seals can be done for the price of a head set at around £80, if piston rings then it needs some serious cash throwing at it to do a job worth doing.

Let me know if I am patronising you, you may know this sort of stuff already. ;)

Talking piston rings and the seals mate. Its not the best sounding engine quite ticky and it doesn't idle well.

My thinking is to combine bits from a 5E-FE and a 5E-FHE to create a 5E-FhE

use sensors from 5e-fe along with distributor and injectors (possibly throttle body as well), but keep the higher compression ratio and cams.

I've done it the other way round. 5E-FE with 5e-fhe sensors, distributor, ECU and inlet manifold and it worked just fine.

I was just wondering if having ABS might cause some complication?

Posted

shouldn't do. Some Seras have ABS and there isn't anything on the engine that interferes with the brakes.

Posted

So you don't think there is any need to fit the 5efhe ECU? How do you think the 5efe ECU will work with the engine?

Posted

I think that providing the engine has 5e-fe distributor (easy swap), injectors (easier swap) and throttle body (easy swap) then the 5E-FE ECU will cope just fine.

The 5E-FHE ECU should allow use of the 5E-FHE injectors and will run a different igntion map. The 5E-FHE has a knock sensor which the 5E-FE doesn't have, so to use the 5E-FHE will require this wiring in (fairly simple I think). However the ECU end will require a bit more wiring as I think this is slightly different. Sera 5E-FHE has 2 plugs, one 26 pin, one 16 pin.

Threepot may have some input on this as he's a hands-on sort of chap.

I once had a Sera turn up with a mysterious running problem. The engine had been swapped with a Paseo one, but it was running the smaller pink Paseo injectors and the ECU was getting in a bit of a tizzy. Swapping injectors to what the ECU was expecting cured the problem instantly. I would imagine (but am not entirely sure) that the same would apply in reverse, hence saying ECU & injectors.

I also once fitted a 5E-FE to a Sera, it was the only option available at the time. Transferred the distributor, inlet manifold and injectors over, and the knock sensor and it worked just fine.

Thanks Andrew,

Very helpful (well deserved guru tag!)

I would like to (eventually) get the engine running to its full capacity, but at the moment its more important to get the car running well again.

Threepot, any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Scott

I checked with a few garages this morning and 'a friend of a friend' who has a garage close by thinks it could be missing as well.

I am getting it pressure checked by them on thursday so I'll put the 5efhe on hold for now.

I feel Andrew has said it all perfectly, and has done exactly the oppposite to this, so will be fine in reverse, i'm going to do it as soon as he lets me buy one of these engines... cough cought hint hint pllllleeeaassseeee??? I got the money :drool:

Use the 5efhe 'engine' but use all the electronics from the 5efe, the ecu wont know the difference. It'll run fine and dandy, not that i've done this before, but I trust andrew when he says the dizzy's swap and thats about the biggest bridge to cross. Use the right injectors and sensors for the right ECU and it should be sweet. Dont mish mash as it will cause issues. You will find the two engines use different TPS sensors and others, so just use ALL the 5efe gear, but the water temp, oil pressure sensors etc will be probally the same. You may find the mounts are slightly different but your paseo ones will definately fit. The engines are the same, they've just had a few tweeks.

Best plan of action is to get both the engines on the floor next to each other and swap all the different bits over where you can see them. This technique has served me well for the last decade

It looks like Im getting closer to another engine all the time. :crybaby:

the list of problems is growing, heres my current situation:

its burning oil, although the exhaust smoke is cleaner than it was.

Its missing, this got really bad this morning, I was unsure if I would make it to work... and Im looking forward to the journey back. lol

I think this could be caused by a build up on the plugs, but havent yet looked at this.

I've have a feeling it could be overfueling too. there is a definate strong smell of petrol from the exhaust (not your normal exhaust smell if you get me)

I'm gonna check with a local specialist about the engine swap, and also to see how the repair cost weighs up against it.

any ideas? lol :help:

mate, you may as well look for a 5efhe, like scottbino. try out apiengines.com but phone them...if you email them they are arrogant buttholes, but someone else on this board's dealt with them and stated them to be great...

go 5efhe, you wont regret it...or if you have money, go 4efte
