From Corolla Gti To Civic Vti (1993)?

Hi Guy's, My rolla's getting on a bit now, it's time for an upgrade, so as toyota don't do a newer version of the GTi, well there is the GXi, but, they're not in the same league. So I've been doing some homework on little jap hatches, and have come up with the Civic VTi 160bhp, as they are similar looking to the corolla GTi (I think honda might have used it as a base, and rounded the Civic off a bit more ;) )

The reason I posted on here is to ask you guys as to what these cars are like if you've had any experience with them, and how do they perform next to the non tvis GTi???, I know the Honda's are quicker.

Cheers

Absolutely wicked cars! Id have one in a jiffy, but as ive got too many cars already its not possible!

The engines are cracking, but do suffer if it hasnt had regular oil changes, due to the Vtec system is so advanced and needs to be looked after, especially with the revs they produce!

There are loads of crap ones out there, so dont rush into buying one, look for the best one you can get your hands on! :D

I had one a while ago mate,It lasted only three weeks before i sold it.......The reason for the quick sale was like this.....the car had F/S/H from new it had a oil change every 2000 miles Right thats fine lovely.......I took it to a guy who does up honda cars for a living coz it sounded like it had a lil miss fire around 4700rpm it took one look and said its the dizzy cap! and the Ht leads could do with a change too? ok i said lets do it..............Have you got big pockets he said?ermmmmm maybe why?dizzy cap 356 pound main dealer only!second i hear you cry.......rare very very rare in total....just shy of 600 pound including labour! To fix NO CHANCE SOLD IT AND BOUGHT ANOTHER ROLLA! I HAVE ONLY ONE THING TO SAY MATE BE REALLY CAREFUL UNLESS YOU ARE BUYING A NEW ONE OR A SHOW CAR DONT BOTHER! you would be better of turbo/super charging your rolla!

I appreciate what your saying mate, but you might have got a bad buy, anyway I'm after the 4-door version, I know not as nice looking but for £700 I can't complain, it's a decent car with a stainless exhaust, and 17" wheels, for a 3-door in this condition I'd be looking at, atleast £1700, so easy way to get into vtec territory.

£600 for dizzy cap and HT lead?? Sorry just go to say this souds ridiculous. Did you appraoch Honda and ask why so much? Also how much labour is involved in replacing the HT lead and dizzy cap?

VTI's are good cars but more refind than GTi's also need to really rev them to get them moving up until VTEC kicks in theres nothing between a VTi or a GTi.

You will find that GTI's are now more sought after than VTI's well good examples anyway.

Yeh, Vti r brillaint engines, my cousin has a 5 door vti, ive driven it once, going up to 9000rpm is immense. i def recommend, i def agree with trueno look around and dont just go for the first one u see. though they r quite hard to find. luckily ur not looking for the hatchback 3 door version because their even harder to find. my cousin did hav a 3 door version but it was written off bcos of some idiot cutting right into his lane and u can imagine wot happened next

Have owned loads - personally i prefer the 3 door models (however the 3dr does as you said hold more value)

4 door is nice also but more aof a wolf in sheeps clothing...

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/5900/stock11030ip.jpg

bullet proof engine if maintained properly:

engines are highly tuneable - all sorts of mods for them - 4-2-1 manifolds / Induction Kits - Apexi VTEC Controllers.....

common faults Mechanically: dizzy, fuel lines/wiring loom and sometimes crunch in 5th gear in high revs... also due to the age of them look out for rust around the wheel arches..

other than that excellent cars and quite economical if driven sensibly.

Rash.

p.s. 700quid is a steal - vti's are good sellers as many people buy them and stick the Type-R lump in them...

I've been in a few CRX VTi's and they are awesome - engine is the same lump as in the Civic VTi. To be honest, depending on how much you have to spend, i'd rather have a CRX, but it'd cost a lot more to get a good CRX rather than a good Civic. If you do choose a Civic i'd go for the 3-door over the 5-door as it weighs 100kg less and therefore will be that little bit quicker (plus looks better).

Dude, i think you were mistaken, a dizy cap for one costs about £30 and is held on with 3, 8mm headed bolts! Its only a piece of plastic! £356+vat is more like the complete dizy you plonker! :P The pick up receiver in the dizy costs about £90 which my mate had to replace in his! So i think you were misled mate! The leads cost about £80 for a full set from Honda, but you can get performance ones cheaper than that!

Hey Guys,

Just got the civic vti, and what an awesome bit of kit it is, take off a GTi is quicker but once the VTEC cuts in and come third gear the VTi is ahead and that where it stays, what a gem of an engine, better brakes (ABS), and better handling than the Corolla.

Whilst I was searcing on the net I found this clip of a race between a corolla Gti (on right of the screen) and civic Vti:

http://www.zippyvideos.com/1985028114054386/15022006/

thats without the vti being setup properly, mine is the older version of the Vti, which is quicker than the one in the clip.

cheers

Nice thx for the clip

Well mine is 167 bhp 0 - 60 under 7.8 secs standard and once that VTI engine starts then you will see how fast it is :D 8000 rmp clear line :)

Na man this millage is all motorway :) so I would count it as 50000 miles not 970000 miles :) with full Honda Service history nothing I could worry about :D

Ops rmp = RPM :)
