Help With 4 runner

ey guys, I am about to pick up an 87 4 runner from my buddy..The only prob is that the trans doesnt shift through the gears in D or in 2...in L1 it works great but as soon as you put it in D it goes to overdrive and bogs down really badly...He had it in mud and the he said he drove over a big sticker bush and thats when it started happening....It sounds like a wire got cut or a sensor shorted out..any ideas?
