Help Please! Yaris Clutch/gearbox Problems :'(

Hi all, im new here its my first post and its regarding a problem i have with my car. Its a T reg freetronic 1.0 (not too sure about the specifics) basicly i have a normal gearbox but no clutch pedal.

My problem is that it seems the clutch doesnt connect, when i try to engage a gear the gearbox is rigid the gearlever does not moove at all. But when i switch the engine on/off the gearlever becomes free again. Then i re-engage gear and i am prevented from upshifting further because the same problem occurs. The engine revs as though in neutral but there is no drive. It has been occuring for sometime but i did not get it checked out as it seemed ok. But the other day it broke down on a busy main rowed and then i got towed to the nearest garage (Jemca, Edgware Rd). who seem to be very unhelpfull ! :ffs:

Its been 3 days and they havent even looked at it yet. I will await them to get back to me with a quote.

In the meantime do you guys know of any other authorised Toyota garages that could repair or take a look at this problem.

Roughly how much do you think it will set me back :'( im only a poor student so the more reasonable quotes the better ! (but i dont want no one dodgy)

If it is the gearbox and not the clutch on its own as i first suspected , is it worth me repairing the vehicle ?? as my car is valued at approx £2000.

I would really appreciate any assistance on this matter , or a suggestion on a different garage who preferably works a lot quicker than my local toyota dealership!.

many thanks

maria

Welcome, maria77.

What year model is the Yaris? What mileage on the clock? When was the last MOT?

Let me get it straight of what you described. Your Freetronic Yaris had been fine until recently. The gearshift played up intermittently: without any warning symptoms, the gear lever on gearshifting became stuck on passing through the neutral position and remained locked, not being able to be moved into gear; all the while the engine could be revved freely. This could be unlocked on turning the engine off. On turning it back on, the gear level could be moved into the 1st gear but there it stayed locked again, could not be shifted to 2nd gear or any other gear. As before this could be freed on switching off the engine. Aside from these intermittent anomalies, the car was fine. I did not have it seen to, hoping it would rectify itself -- I put in this last bit of my own. Then a few days ago, while driving in heavy traffic, the car "broke down" altogether -- it isn't clear exactly what constituted this "broke down". Was it that the locked gear lever could not be freed on switching off the engine this time?

I'm with Bee here you need to clarify the points she made above.

That being said it does sound like a clutch problem at least if it was a conventional gearbox. If you turn the engine off you should be able to get it in most gears. When it's running you should have problems getting it into gear.

Again on a conventional box parts wouldn't be massively expansive but it's the labour that'd be expensive. I think they quote something like 6 hours to do it. I have seen them done in about 2 though

From its present estimated value of £2000, this crippled Yaris Free-Tronic could be one of the early ones when the model was first introduced in the UK. If my understanding of the description of the symptoms is correct, then I suspect strongly that the Free-Tronic hydraulic has gone. It has been written up that the hydraulic cylinder has a propensity to leak.

Check the level of the hydraulic fluid in its reservoir which is by the side of the Battery (Diagram on page 249 of the Owner's Handbook). The container could well be empty! A replacement with a new cylinder including labour charge is about £400.

And as to the recommendation of a good Toyota garage in Greater London, north of the Thames, I have only had dealings with Currie Motors in Watford. These were routine services not repair, so I can't say. (I can't even tell if Currie is good at car servicing either! It has been just uneventful, that's all.) I wish you good luck.
