Hello Everyone!!

New to the site and like what i see straight away which is good.

To kick things off, what exactly have i got?

Storey so far is i have the chance tomorrow of taking on my brother-in-laws Black Celica. Its done 50K had one owner from new (him) and its been garaged all its life. Its not all roses though guys!!

Firstly what is it exactly. I'm into mk1 Golfs so i'm out of touch here with the Celica's. Its on an L Plate and it has the pop up head lights. i know its not the GT4 as i have always kept my eyes out for one of those coming up cheap, so i'm guessing its 1.8cc 16V. What generation is this and how do i refere to here on the forum?

The bad news is that it has problems!! He went on holiday and on his return was told by a neighbour that the alarm had been going off untill the Battery finally went dead.

He charged the Battery and got it started but had major electrical gremlins. Ie no electrics in the cabin, no lights but the engine drove fine.

Now he has no knowledge of cars so he drove it down to good old Toyota at Reading and they have told him its £240 to diagnose that he needs a total rewire at a cost of £1500. Don't you just love garages!!

Up shot is he said no thanks, told them to put the dash back in so it was as it was when he gave it to them and drove it home.

The only problems he has now are the head lights light fine but do not pop up and the interior light does not work.

I pick the car up tomorrow, what do you guys thing is my first starting point? Any of this sound familiar? any links to a wiring diagram for this model would be greatly appreciated.

This Forum looks pretty slick and first impressions are a wealth of knowledge, hope you guys can help.

Cheers Dom..................

Your car is referred to as a 'gen 5'.

Others will be along shortly . . .

Oh and welcome

If you are in Reading, there are plenty of us local boys to give you a hand if needed.

Cheers Guys,

that was a quick response! Looks like the local following is on par with my VW links.

Thats good to know, i shall keep you posted as i find out more.

Thanks for the link on the electrics. They are not my strong point.

Showing my ignorance already then! They are all 2.0ltr 16V are they not. What is the standard BHP on these?

Looking at the pics of some of the cars on the Forum the early Gen cars look well retro nowdays. not to many of them around i'm sure.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the world of Toyota! I imagine it will take you a while to get used to a car that requires little work! But a MK1 golf is a car worthy of a bit of TLC IMHO! I used to have a light green 1.6 gti with orange interior on an x plate, not that quick but felt ace to drive! Its the only car without Power steering I have enjoyed driving.

Thanks again for the help so far guys!

Thought i'd give you all an update.

First impressions are of a nice tidy car with little use and well care for so i know the problems are not down to abuse.

The car runs and drives fine but for the short list i have drawn up of not working electrics:

Non work:

Interior light,

Alarm,

Stereo,

Dash clock,

Headlights / motors

Main beam / flash

Boot Light

The short report from Toyota Reading reads,

Investigate headlights not working, car jump started and headlights went down and will not go up again. Strip out interior panel, remove front bumper, remove inner arch trims. After checking through, the wiring loom to fault in light wiring found the loom burned out and causing a constant feed to the motor and relay.

customer told to reassemble.

Cut wires and taped up ends, refit all parts :(

I also have the blue relay box for what i assume is the motor control for the headlights sitting on the passenger seat. "Retract control" is written on the box.

SMG Thanks for the electrical link but the "electrical wiring Routing" and the "Overall electrical wiring diagrams dont work from the link. is this the same for everybody? shame as i think they are the going to help me locate the loom.

Looks like i may need to replace a section of the loom which i assume is behind the drivers side of the dash as the leccy link from SMW shows the "retract Control" is sittuated here.

Anybody no a good source for this second hand. My knowledge of scrap yards is based around VW's. Do you guys have a link for new sparez from a third party or do you have to go to Toyota direct?

Was hoping to get a head start on it at lunch but what a suprise its pouring down out there!!!

Cheers Guys

I think your best bet realistically would be to find a reputable auto electrician locally and get them to have a look at it. It might only be something simple. And it`s got to be better than struggling with a half hidden wiring loom for hours.

As far as breakers are concerned, have a look in the stickies. TCB are the guys for bits. Reasonable prices too.
