Corolla Head Unit Removal?

Hi, my mum's now got my grans' old 1.3 GL automatic Corolla (1992, but only 30k!) It's the older style shape (mk 6?) the same shape as the GTi-16

I want to put a sony cd player in i've got lying around.

I can't see any visible way of getting the old radio (model number: 5662) out? there's 4 screws holding the top of the dashboard together but they extend all over to the instrument panel so i'm not sure if it'd be wise to undo them?

Any ideas/similar experiences?

(and do i need the ISO adaptor, is it the standard Toyota to ISO that i've seen everywhere?)

Cheers

Joe

hi there, did this quite a few times in my old 1.3.....

first thing to remove is the lower dash section on the drivers side, there are 4 screws to remove,

once this is off remove the section of the dash that extends the entire way along the bottom of the instrument binnacle, there should be 2 screws in a similar place to 2 of the ones already removed (makes sense when you look at it!!)

unplug the fog light switch and the heated rear screen switch,

around the wee tape holder/pocket thing and heater controls the dash will pop off, unplug the lighter and the whole section can be removed

then move onto the curled section that surrounds the instruments and the radio, there are 4 or 5 screws going up into the top section of the dash, once these are undone it can be removed

you should then see the 4 bolts holding the standard head unit in place, remove them with a screwdriver or even better a torque wrench

yes you will need the toyota to ISO harness adaptor

you can either use the two brackets and bolt the sony in or more simply use the sony cage and fit it as you would in most other cars

and one last bit of advice wold be to upgrade the front Speakers and put something, anything(!!) in the back cos the four inches of paper that toyota fitted as standard just doesnt cut it

as a haynes manual would then say "refitting is reversal of removal"

*****, my pug 306 is a two minute job :P

Thanks a lot mate, will take a look over the weekend then hopefuly. Not sure whether to bolt it in or use the cage, 1.3 auto isn't the fastest so not sure how long mum's keeping it but i'll see how long it takes to put it in/out

thanks again!
