If they are the same system, I bet there will be some "support system" put into place for far more efficient servicing of the RFTs then exist here !

Hmmmm! a support system for the support system. Could run and run that one. Or run(flat) and run(flat)!

Sorry - I should restrain myself in such an august forum. :!Removed!:

Chris

I wonder if the helpline phone number will be FLAT rate!:lol:

Well - it's unlikely to be a local number if it's anything like here!

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm not familiar with T180, but I have RAV4 D-CAT Executive with BSR (Bridgestone support ring) system and tyres 235/55/18.

For me was very difficult to make the research I did and to understand the difference between run flat tyres and run flat system - BSR.

BSR -

http://www.bridgestone.eu/bfe/v/index.jsp?...0005101a10aRCRD

and here

http://www.runflat-system.com/index_en.html

The run Flat tyres has nothing to do with the BSR Run Flat system.

The only car that drives with this system is Toyota Rav4 Executive and thousands of people have the same problem...

This was very difficult to explain in my country when I was looking \and still do\ for tyres because nobody have ever heard about it.

Everybody offered me a run flat tyres, but I can't put run flat tyres on a run flat system.

The system itself is just the wheel rim with censors, the support ring and an ordinary tyre which has a special sign on it that it is made for this system...only because it comes with some special gel for replacement.

http://img404.imageshack.us/my.php?image=18092008um5.jpg

Also on the official site of Bridgestone they mention that the tyres have to be replaced by a sertified specialist which I doubt we have here in Bulgaria ...

I still don't have a solution to my "finding tyres problem" I need both winter and summer tyres - still waiting a reply from the Bridgestone representative office if they can find who and how to import such a tyres in Bulgaria for my car and how much they would cost....

I'm writting this only because there might be someone else with this problem and the whole story, problems, suggestions, somehow solutions and correspondence letters with Toyota are described here in this German forum, so it might help somebody:

Yes you are in a very difficult position. What do Toyota say?

We have no requirement here for winter tyres so that aspect is not an issue for us. However, the basic cost is and one option would be to change the wheels for some with standard tyres.

Good luck.

I had a look on the Toyota Germany website and they sell the RAV4 with the D-CAT engine in two trim levels - the "Executive" with the 18" BSR system and the "Sol" with the normal 17" Wheels (and probably no spare, but a can of sealent).

Given that you are in a country that has zero support and backup for the BSR Tyre System (and the difficulties we have even in the UK on this), I think getting a set of standard 17" "Sol" spec wheels fitted with Winter Tyres would be a good option rather then attempting to keep the BSR on a 2nd set of Wheels for winter use.

Also - I think we on this forum should really stop using the term RFT for this BSR system, as they are not Run Flat TYRES at all, but is a Run Flat SYSTEM as the BSR stops the tyre actually ever going flat.

Kinda defeats the purpose - pulling a landrover with a landrover! I'd pull a landrover with a Toyota but am afraid that the RAV might catch something! So I use the Renault. The gas out the back keeps the landrover in quarantine!

That is why those guys are in the front of the discovery - trying to attach a tow rope to the landrover pulling the landrover

That is what it says in the link Christa posted .... "The tyres have to be confirmed run-flat durability with Bridgestone Support Ring in advance and have to be indicated Support Ring mark on the tyre sidewall"

The whole BSR situation gets more farcical as time goes on. How long can this BSR stay alive with only one version of one car from a single manufacturer using it

Excellent idea Hoovie - BUT you can't possibly ask for ideas on this forum as the moderator will demand, probably quiet legitimately, overtime!

It seems logical to me that they are not standard tyres, otherwise you would be able to fit the support "fifty-pence-pieces" in any manufacturers tyre. If that were the case, other than the price of the support ring, it's durability, it's availability and the labour costs involved in fitting the tyres, we would have nothing to complain about!!!!!!! :ffs: ........... other than that then, what did the Romans every do for us?

Always thought the tyre were 'normal'? Are we now saying they are special tyres, which a special logo on them?

The tyres are absolutely normal \ordinary\ and what makes them special is only the logo and the special repair kit they come along with which is some tool and a special gel for montage.

http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco...p;nichtweiter=1

The Dueler H/T 687, originally designed for Toyota RAV4, offers superior dry and wet road performance without sacrificing riding comfort.

Probably in Europe more expensive but that was one of the first links I found.

They don't mention the kit, but an engeneer form the Bridgestone representative office here in Bulgaria told me about it. Still waiting a reply form him if they can import this tyres or if I can do something else.

The whole story and situation together with Toyota Germany correspondance is described in the link I gave - in the German forum. If someone speaks a good German can read it and write back here.

It is a whole drama and very interesting topic... and after reading the whole story clears up. I don't speak German but a friend of mine found this link for me, printed the topic and translated it for me.

It is a option probably to buy from Germany wheel rims with tyres - the 17 once and I know they are around EUR 1500 which is also a lot \for me\.

Ofcourse here in Toyota they told me...no, you can't put another wheel rims because your valve sencors will not work with the new ones... the sencors were for Lexus originaly and most of the part of this car actualy are for Lexus, even an ordinary filter for AC or Oil filters... I'm still in research process...

I don't know if it is good to drive in the winter with this all season tyres Dueler... as they are mentioned like all season tyres. All of my friends are telling me that is not a good idea in the winter to drive with all seasons tyres - especially here we have some bad road conditions in the winter.

I've always had winter and summer tyres for my ex cars...

This is a first situation like this.

And if I only knew... I shouldn't buy this car.... but I didn't have a slight idea for any of this...

Probably it was better to take a credit \kidding\ ...and buy Lexus instead of top Rav4 which is equipted with Lexus spair parts...

P.S.: Sorry if my English is not that good but it is quite difficult for me to explain technical problems :))

Do not worry about explaining yourself in English Christia. Most of the folk here have trouble understanding English unless its badly spelt. And nobody understands Scottish and I was asked to engage an interpretor to translate my posts to the badly spelt English!!

I'd guess that you could buy a set of wheels for your RAV and fit them with winter tyres. The air pressure sensor is less important than having a proper set of tyres for the road conditions. In the UK, most tyres are all season which explains why England grinds to a halt at the first sign of a snow fall!!! The tread pattern is unsuitable for mud or snow conditions.

Why would they have the repair kit with run flats ? Are you sure they are run flats ? That sounds like the repair kit that comes with the XT-R.

That is an interesting point, Dave. And I believe the answer is in the link that Christa posted and which no one either knew about or mentioned before.

Apparently there is a special lubricant that is needed to prevent overheating.

bsr_side.jpg

I actually wonder if this IS being used and if that is why the BSR gets deformed due to excessive heat :g:

I really don't know another word for it... In my language is the same :))))) I mean I check in the dictionary and it is OK. Which is the English word for putting tyres on and taking tyres off \replacing tyres\ ? :D

My technical Englishis not that good :))

Yes, the lubricant is part of the kit and also some tool, what tool and how it looks I don't know.

Probably Bridgestone UK can explain it better.

When my friend translated for me the whole 4 pages topic of the German forum, where the whole story clears up, I was surprised that so many people in Germany that bought this car are not familiar with the system and the tyres.

I admit I can not be...as the boy who bought the car for me and drove it here...might not be and he told me I just have to find run flat tyres...which by his opinion was awsome....

but so many people in Germany... I was shoked.

Edit:

some very interesting info there, Christa

and for someone who says they do not speak English very well, you do a very fine job indeed  - I am sure everyone understands you (probably a lot more then understands Bothwell Buyer, our friend who speaks scottish)

And Montage is a perfectly appropriate word to use - it is not one I would have used before but is describes the activity perfectly

You will have to be careful, though :P - A good looking girl with a top RAV4 AND who likes to talk technical - that is a very powerful combination for Englishmen who are into their cars :drool:

Do you know if the sealant can on these kits is a one-off use or can it be used different times until empty? (I have a little trailer with 12" thin wheels which it would be handy to have this kind of thing inthe car for :) )

Thank you, Hoovie :)))

Technical things are not a problem for me as I manage everything at home alone, from phones, lamps, computers ... and also as someone who work with a computer and different softwares all day long... I've manage to learn lot of things. Now learning the cars navi systems :D Intending to become an expert or making a business :D Anyway I will charge less then EUR 4000 if someone brakes his navi screen :P :D

*

I finaly have a call back from the Bridgestone engeneer I spoke for the tyres.

He promissed me I will have a price and tyres soon.

He told me better not to drive with all season tyre Dueler 678 H/T

Better to have winter and summer tyres both.

The winter tyres which will come with this kit (I will make photos of everything I get when this story comes to its end and post them in the forum)... are Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 4x4 235/55 R18 100H

and also I will think about summer tyres and a normal price for montage, because the one I got yesterday was EUR 200-250... which is extreme...for replacing tyres.

In the normal services for replacing tyres the price here is from EUR 15 to 40.
