What Sort Of Realistic Discount Should I Aim For?

Hi,

Going to have a look at a 1.3 T Spirit 5dr, it's an 04 that has done 25800 miles. Now it is being sold by a Toyota main dealer and they have put it up for £7495.

Most cars i see on autotrader etc of that age have significantly lower mileage although are often dearer, or are nearer that price but are 3dr which i know is a bit cheaper.

On the assumption that it is in a1 condition and drives well.....plus SWMBO decides she wants it. How much should be by aiming to get knocked off the price. I am not happy to pay £7495 for it, what are main dealers like for discounting?

Bearing in mind that i am roughly 100 miles from the next nearest dealer so choice is limited. How well do Yaris' take mileage? When do all the rattles start?

rattles can start from day one, although few and far between.

yari take millage with a pinch of salt, there are some on here with over 100k with no serious issues having gone wrong, just the normal wear and tear. 25k is a baby.

i would go in and aim to pay as near to 7k as possible. try and get a couple of free bits in too, eg tank of fuel

good luck, let us know how u get on

If you are using their finance haggle hard for a good price or APR. If you are financing it yourself you are in a slightly weaker position but still go for it.

In my experience you are far more likely to get extras than a huge wad off. Assuming the dealer probably got the car for about £5000 they are probably looking to get £6900 for it which means you need to get £600 off.

So either go for the £600 straight off (IMO I would just ask for what you want rather than going in with a very low offer but others on here will not agree with that) as it shows you are serious.

Alternatively pay the full £7495 but agree extras which will be worth £600 to you (but will cost the dealer less). Things to think about are servicing, mats, wheels, tyres, audio upgrades, fuel etc. They will try and offer you Supraguard protection saying it's worth £300 -up to you but I wouldn't want it.

If you are struggling to get a deal start to show interest in a cheaper car they have this might push them to get you back to the dearer car by doing a deal. When talking to them refer to the car as 'the old model' - and point out anything that you don't like. If they think you love the car they will assume the deal will close anyway as you will be driven by your heart. Obviously don't slate it completely as they will see through it but just be polite but firm about the not so good bits of the car.

They have got to make a profit but you also want a deal - there is always middle ground - just gotta find it.

Good luck.
