Small Paint Chips

Hey!

I washed the car today and unfortunately noticed a few very small paint chips on the front spoiler and one on the hood, supposedly from tiny rocks or something. The car is 6 months old, and this is really sad! I dont want to respray these at all, they are very tiny and small. Will these rust in the future or become larger from their current small and tiny size? How can I treat these the best way?

im no expert but as far as i know there are a few options

if its down to metal it will rust and get worse so it needs treating

if it isnt then it might be ok to leave but itll possibly not help matters esp cosmetically

turtle wax do a chipstick with their colourmagic polishes that can partially conceal small chips scratches and it works ok but is noticeable on close inspection, plus it needs reapplying after about every 20 or so washes.

there are small colour paint things also that can be used to fill small chips but not a good idea i dont think if its down to metal.

guess beyond those cheap n easy fixes its a really delicate case of applying either...

if its down to metal a small spot of the primer stuff onto the metal then a touch of paint and then a lil spot of laquer

or if not down to metal just a spot of paint then laquer but make sure u get a good paint match.

whateever way u do things if its down to metal do something abou it as rust is baaaad

gl an hope u get it nicely sorted

Thank you so very much! The tiny chips on the front spoiler are definitely not down to metal, they are rather like tiny dots. On the hood though there is one small one as well, its not round and not like a dot, but rather like a small square. I'm not sure if that is down to metal or not, but it might be...

How can I inspect if it's down to metal or not? I really dont want to deal with rust, especially on such a new car! I do have some touch up paint I received from the dealership when purchasing the car, but by touching it up I think since I have no previous experience with it, it might not be a good job and might look bad and perhaps even worse. :(

I think everyones Yaris on this forum is like that! I've got about 3742893789245 stone chips and they are absolutely nothing to worry about, I'd just leave them!

You have no problems or encounters with rust at all from those stone chips? This is my main worry, I hope it does not start to rust in the future even though they are tiny and small...

I thought that the Yaris front spoiler was part of the bumper assembly and therefore plastic.

I dont think you will get any rust there. ;)

The front bumper is plastic so no worries about rust there! As for any stone chips on the metal bodywork, try using your touch up paint on one in an unnoticeable area. Have a paper towel nearby to wipe it off if you get it wrong and practise. Use only a little paint on the brush and you should be okay. If you have a touch up kit with the little brush you may wish to use a smaller, softer brush that comes to a point. Art and model shops sell these.

Either way, shake the bottle well to mix the paint thoroughly then apply only a small amount of paint and let it dry totally before applying another coat, if necessary. Building up the paint thin layer by thin layer is far better than applying a 'blob' of paint.

As your car is Thunder Grey (I think?), you will also need to apply a thin coat of clear lacquer over the paint colour.

Step back and admire your handiwork then, after a few days give it a wash and wax and you should be laughing.

Thanks guys! :) Yeah the color is Thunder Grey, so I'll see what I can do, I know that this happens to everyone and can happen anywhere, but it's still making me mad! :( Really, I should have thought of it, the front spoiler/bumper is plastic indeed, so there is no need to worry there! Unfortunately though the one on the bonnet is the one to go crazy about :crybaby: , I will try and do something quick and efficient to finally calm myself down and relax... :!Removed!:

Thanks again, cheers!

Yo,

According to Parkers the front of the car is quite prone to stone chips - just the way its shaped.

I have millions on my car (I know I bought it used, but still).

It's probably quite costly to fix it, and new things don't stay new long, so it might not be worth the effort. Besides, you'll get more anyway, so it might be a bit short lived.

Yeah, this is what I'm worried about, but oh well I should just move on and not take it so seriously...

Wow, your pretty good at counting  ! must have required quite a lot of concentration

Stone chips are evident on mine too, if all Yarii are like it its nothing to worry about really, as it wont make any one particular one lose huge value unless its mega bad.

Just make the bumper/bonnet a service item - every 2 years, get 'em sorted out professionally, and resprayed :) thats what I'll do, when mine gets really minging B)

i used to work at a paint chip place and the way we do it is by t-cutting the bad panel and then by air brush, just squirt a tiny bit of colour into the chip. then with some decent wax polish, just polish a round the edge of the chip and hey presto chip gone!!! and folkes are willing to pay good money for this just because you keep your origional paintwork and its back to pristine nick!!

give it a try.

  • 7 months later...

Anyone got any idea of the cost of having a Yaris bonnet resprayed ?...if the stone chips get that bad it may be an option..

No repray needed. Specialised firms will do localised repairs. Look for Chips Away in Yellow Pages.

Had them on an Audi A4 - did a super job.

Me? I just add a little touch up paint very carefully on worst chips , leave it to dry for 2-3 days and then wax polish.

I always BUT ALWAYS buy a manufacturers touch up pack with a newtome car for the odd chips..

Apparently toyota paint is really soft and bad for chipping. My car is covered in chips, doesnt help that its black. I just touch them up with the sets you buy in Halfords...cant afford a respray!

Bonnet respray at my local place is around £300 with filling in the holes that the Badge makes aswell, and thats quite a good price i believe
