Hi newbie to the site here,

at the moment am looking into buying my first celica. after looking through the forum and other sites i have decided to go for a Gen5 celica as i think they look mint, but im unsure on wether to go for a gt or gt4.

am lookin for a reliable car that can be used every day, as after owning a escort rs turbo for the last 2 years am sick of having break downs and problems every other week :censor: ,

this is why im leaning towards the n/a gt as its not turbo'ed but the gt4 is just so tempting

i know nothing about these cars so was just looking to get some advice about each of the cars, eg costs, reliability etc and wot yous think would be the best option.

any advice much appreciated

cheers chris

An Escort RS turbo is hardly the epitome of reliability though is it. Please don't compare it to a Toyota. Both the gt and gt4 are very reliable cars, but as with any vehicle of this age, if it's not been looked after then you could be in for expensive problems. Just got to choose carefully, scrutinise service history etc. The only slight weakness is headgaskets, but I suspect most cases are due to abuse/neglect - too much boost, knackered cooling system etc.

If you want a gt4 you are probably best to go for it, otherwise you will probably be regretting it later.

apologys for sounding like i was comparing a toyota to the escort i was just saying why i got rid of it, as i know that any toyota is a far superior and better car than the escort.

Get a gen6 much better!!

Get a gen6 much better and more reliable!!:thumbsup: ;)

More reliable than what????? Reliability isn`t really an issue. A gen 5 is just as reliable as the 6. If properly looked after and driven/modified within it`s capabilities. A good well looked after ST185 will be a good buy if you don`t want massive power, and considerably cheaper than an ST205.. The later Gen 6 has more strength built into it`s engine (Thickwall block) and tranny, but it has to cope with more power. Which it does admirably with ease.

But as Mike pointed out the Gen 5 is getting on a bit now so you do really want one thats been well pampered. Mines got 125K on it and it runs like a dream, despite some ermm 'enthusiastic' driving.

I agree with what you say Daktari,

I looked round for ages for my Gen 5 GT4, as there are afew money pits out there!

I've had mine a while now and shes a daily driver and apart from am recent annoying wheel bearing problem it drives like a dream. Mines an import with 133K on it. No leaks, no smoke just plenty of GO.

But if your getting a Gen 5 you mite as well spend that little bit more and go for the GT4. You wont regret it, just give them a good coat of looking at before you buy!!

Mike I think you misread his post! He agrees with you!

He was saying that he wants a GT4 but is put off because he's had problems with a turbo car before (i.e. comparing the reliability of an RS turbo to a GT4):

I don`t mind admitting the Gen 6 is a better all round performer, in the same way the Gen 5 is a better all round performer than the Gen 4. It`s a progress thing. I`ve said it before and i`ll say it again. My idea of a perfect GT4 is later Gen 6 engine and transmision in a Gen 5 body. Purely because i love the shape of the Gen 5. It`s all down to personal taste. :D
