Hi All,

How much do you's all know about Diff's? Mine makes a strange grumbling noise if I get it up to a good speed (120+) and then let off the accelerator, once it drops below the 100 mark it goes quiet. It's also quite noisy in reverse, is this normal for the car?

Another question, how "slick" is a normal gearbox, or are they all a little bit clunky?

And Clutch slave cylinder, mine's leaking, is that a common problem? Am I best off stripping it down and applying the toyota repair kit or shall I bin it and get a new one?

Please, you're opinions will be more than welcome.

Diffs are not normally a problem on these.

Are you sure it's the diff?? can't see why it would make a noise only on overrun at 120mph.

The W58 gearbox which you have (that is if it's a manual) is commonly known to be a nicer feel than the R154 which is found on the turbo manual and is often said to be a little agricultral. I'd say change the gearbox oil if it hasn't been done for a while.

Clutch slave cylinder is common, repair kit will do fine.

HTH

Edit---if you have a clutch, you've obviously got a manual :doh

It's a manual but the gear change is not clunky but when I change from second to third (especially if I try to hurry it) I sometimes seem to end pushing it into the gap between first and third, can I put this down to a lack of experience with this car or is there a problem with the gearbox?

Speaking of Turbo vs Non-Turbo gearboxes, is there anything to be gained by switching them? Like am I going to get a higher (potential) top speed with a turbo box compared to the non turbo, or am I just going to loose all the power because of the longer throw of the 'box?

Regarding the Diff, there's a nice line of oil on the body directly above the offside flange plate so I think one of the seals has gone, I think that may be the root cause of the problem  One of the guys I work with reckon it's one of the thrust bearings, and if it's seaped a load of oil out in it's youth that'd corroborate the story..... I think I'm going to err on the safe side and order a new one then fix the old one up (plug the leak) and sell it on eBay....

Clutch Slave cylinder repair kit on order....

Redline for gearbox? or Diff?

Gearbox

Diffs are cheap second hand...

I would stick with the n/a gearbox.... to change it you need to change the flywheel, clutch, prop shaft etc etc and the W58 in all in all a smoother box!
