Sticking Accelerator:

Hello everyone,

I've just joined as I am about to acquire a Gen 6 Celica SR.

It has sticking accelerator problem - when left for a few days the accelerator requires a lot of force to unstick it - the throttle butterfly is sticking in the closed position.

The owner of the car has tried cleaning it (I think a small amount of WD40 was used) but it hasn't helped.

I've searched, but not seen this problem mentioned before.

What parts should I think about replacing and what would be the best source for the parts?

Thanks.

If it is definately the butterfly causing the problem it might be cheaper and easier to get a good second hand throttle body from a breakers like TCB LINKY

my 202 did this , i found it more the pedal jamming rather than the throttle body itself ??????????

It's definitely the throttle body, it feels "sticky" when playing about with it under the bonnet, although I haven't tried to cure it myself yet.

Looking forward to getting the car!

Thanks for the link daktari, might come in useful sometime!

I just got an SR, and I have exactly the same problem! A friend of mine had a Almera with the same thing and took it to the local garage. the guy there only took 10 mins to sort it, i'm hoping it will be the same for me. I'll have a word with how he is fixing it, and report back.

Shud be taking it up there at the weekend.

Hi all,

I'm having exactly the same problem on my 202.

It just sticks when closed and needs a little tap to release it. Problem is mine will stick if left for only a few seconds at times meaning it can happen at traffic lights, and when bad, during normal driving making things quite jerky!.

I'm going to investigate this weekend but it seems like the actual pedal to me.

i had a stuck throttle on my gen 5 which turned out to be a frayed cable- pretty obvious in my case as it was knackered!

doesnt sound like you guys have the same problem but i thought i'd mention it whilst on the subject.

it looked like it had been nicked in the past with a tool or something, and turned ito a fray- and it stuck full on when i was showing an audi tdi a clean set of heels on a bypass- so if yours has been damaged, replace it - you have been warned!

Hey,

Had exact same problem on my 202, cleaned throttle body- bit o WD40 and all is fine, no sticking. Make sure you give it some elbow grease and it should be fine!

CJ
