Engine Oil

Hey m8s, over here Mr.T tells us just to make the first maintenance service at 15k Km (oil change, etc..) well, got my yaris from new, and the engine oil is almost at 10500km, and getting a little dark, people from my class [Mec. Engineering :P ] keep telling me that I should have changed the oil by 1000 or 2000km...

What do you suggest me?? Should I hurry up the service thing?? :P

Cumps!!

Following the service schedule should mean your car runs nicely for quite a while, but of course, the more oil changes, the nice it is on your engine.

I'd be inclined to change it between every service as well, as every 1000km seems a bit of overkill.

I've always changed my oil every 5000 miles (8000km), doesn't let the oil get too crappy then. Its quick, cheap and easy to do and it won't cause the engine any harm thats for sure.

15k km should be fine, yaris is not exactly a high performance engine, your merc m8's have probably have too much cash to spare

u could do your own oil changes in between your toyota service if u are fussy

Well the 1000km oil change is only because those were the first kilometers, [i don't know how you call that period in english but translating it from portuguese you would say "rounding"] you should expect a bit of engine wearing and with the components adjusting themselves, oil can get a little 'dirty' :P

thanks!! =)

Yes, I know what you are saying, Mad_Ness. This is colloquially known as "breaking in" or "running in" of a new car (or, to be accurate, new engine). There are a lot of diverse, not to say interesting, opinion on the subject if you look up these two in your web search. As regard the time for the first oil change, here is a post from a car enthusiasts' forum, whose deliberation probably amounts to the 'last word' on the subject! This modern concept applies to all modern cars, not just VW-Audi.

So now you have reasons to feel a good deal less worried if you stick with what the manufacturer in the Owner's Manual "mandates", using the same emphatic word as the contributor's. :)

I do mine every 8000miles

:) I do mine every 6 months using Mobil 1 and spark plugs,i know the modern spark plugs last a lot longer now a days but chaning them every 6 month i personaly find a differance in performance, plus i'm not paying them robbing A**holes at Benfeild Toyota to put chip oil in my pride and joy.

An interesting link Bee, but written from an American viewpoint where they have a problem with low-grade oils. They change every 3000 miles, if they believe the sales pitch. However, as they change oil so often on some of the older Detroit offerings, they use cheapo oils. Bad news when VW, Toyota and similar more modern engines, in their thousands, died the "black death" from oxidation. Just one minor point re the VW factory fill: its not a 15w/40 nowadays SFAIK: rather its usuaully 5w/30 synthetic, for those vehicles with variable service intervals (the majority?) The first change comes some time after 10,000 miles. So running in oils are a nonsense also.
