P2 Yaris Auto?

Hi all

Some advice please, I've sold my Yaris and am currently on the hunt for another car for my Mrs.

I was going to get her the phase 2 t spirit, she only drives auto so I thought I'll start looking...only to be told by a mate that the auto box is like a manual with no clutch (5 gears) & is a bit jerky if you don't change gears properly.

Is this true? Does anyone have an auto and how do you find the drive compared to other automatic cars that have the standard 'drive' 'park' etc

Sounds like a stupid question I know but your help is appreciated all the same!

Thanks

hiya, there are 2 types of auto yaris, a fully auto box or clutchless manual

i have only driven the full auto, it is smooth and nippy, just put it in "D" and off you go

it has a overdrive button on the side when u are cruising to save fuel.

previously driven manual cars i would not say it is jerky but its not as responsive as a manual car

I've been driving a new 1.3 T Spirit with MMT for about 6 days now, have done 70 miles all town driving.Previous to this I've been driving the normal types of auto for 15 years. The new Yaris is different to drive it hesitates sometimes from 1 to 2 and you have to learn to use the handbrake again for starting uphill. It is as far as I can see really a manual box with no clutch pedal and auto control, but it's no more difficult to cope with than a standard old style auto box and I for one like it.

I'm awaiting delivery of the mmt yaris but have test driven it and really like it. My personal opinion is its better and smoother to drive it in "manual" mode. This is where you push the gearstick either backwards or forwards to change up or down lifting your foot off the throttle as you would a manual. It then basically drives as a manual but the clutch is worked for you.

If you drive it in auto mode, you have to gauge when the engine is going to change up or down and let your foot off the throttle otherwise the engine races and you can hear it slip and lurch into gear. I guess it will be easy to do it with practice when you get to know your own car.

Personally I would say go for it, its a cheaper alternative to a conventional auto box and its as economical as a manual, a win win situation I say.

If you are a manual driver then the MMT is probably the way to go as it is economical and can be matched to a smaller engine, but if you are used to a Conventional Auto you may have problems .

I assess older and disabled drivers and the MMT is a death trap to them as it does not creep, it rolls back, the gear changes are jerky and they cannot park it. They are petrified of driving it and according to my dealership they are losing trade from their regular Toyota customers. I have sat in when it has rolled back and I have had to apply the H/B to secure the car. This is often not explained to the customer.

You must really try it first and make sure it is for you and anyone else who will drive it.

Toyota are losing their core market with no Yaris Verso and no Torque Converter Auto. Both were the best on the market but this is now going to Ignis, Picanto, Getz etc.

That is not quite true..............as I am sure you will find out when you get your MMT Yaris at the weekend.

When driving in E (Auto Mode) the very clever computerised selector system momentarily dips the throttle as the gears change up, so you do not have to let your foot of the throttle when accelerating.

In my experience with the MMT Yaris over the past 18 months + the engine does not race and the car does not lurch into gear as you describe.

When you get your car you will soon see what I mean, as progress can be very smooth and seamless with the gearchanges.

It is good to see at last some more MMT representation on these forums as I have been singing the praises of the MMT system for a long time by myself.

In my case passengers in my car are pleasantly surprised at how smooth (and swift) the progress is with the MMT box.

I hope that you enjoy you car when you get it  ............let us know.
