Hi all. Been reading the forum for a few weeks now, since I bought my Carina (R Reg 82,000) and found it very useful. I have a question thogh, that I've not seen answered yet - apologies if it's already been discussed.

When the car is cold, the accelerator pedal sticks and needs quite a push to to get any movement on it whatsoever. At standstill this can be alleviated by 'pumping'the pedal a couple of times before moving off, but when in slow moving traffic it becomes a bit of a problem. Theres basically nothing betwen idle speed , then a sudden lurch to over 3000 rpm as you push the pedal past the point where its sticking.

Is this a common problem, is it serious, and how do i go about solving it?

Thanks in advance for the help

might be the accelerator cable is rusted up or the throttle linkage is sticking, check both and see how you get on

My carina has exactly the same problem. It is easily resolved.

The accellerator cable is connected to the lever which opens the throttle plate. This fully closes at rest. Over a period of time there is a build up contaminants along the wall of the throttle housing which fouls the edge of the throttle plate causing it to 'stick' against the housing walls.

Solution - loosen the brackets to give access to the housing next to the throttle plate. Then remove the crud with something like cif cream.

It keeps it clear for about 6 - 12 months of so before it begins sticking again.

Take the air intake pipe off the throttle hosuing. This holds the butterfly and as Gazza has said, it can get stuck in the idle position. Use WD40 or a drop of thinners on a rag to wipe it clean. Should last more than 12 months.

  • 1 month later...

This will most probably be down to the throttle butterfly thingy sticking in the carb .......................remove the large black rubber thingy and clean the area with a carb cleaner spray and a toothbrush :yes:
