with 97ron fuel do you get better m.p.g., would the engine inject less fuel for the same performance as 95ron. or do you use it just to get the extra acceleration. as i never go above 28 miles an hour ( well that's what the computer average speed says and it's never wrong officer honest ! ) must work that out including the time it's stopped on the drive.

Each time I try BP Ultimate or Optimax I find I don't notice any difference from the standard stuff.

On my last two visits to the petrol station I put in the Texaco higher octane petrol and Shell Optimax.... I can't say I noticed much difference on any front, but I did get 320 miles per tank, but that's mostly motorway mileage (approx 32-33MPG). I would get better economy if I didn't have a full set of alloys in the back of the car, plus all my luggage for my trip home (and the induction kit doesn't help either!)

You won't notice any difference. The ECU isn't optimised for it.

Needs to be tuned enough that knocking occurs earlier on into a range the ECU could normally run ok at or have the ECU modified to take advantage of it under normal conditions.

Everything else is pretty much a placebo effect

I can notice a difference, I've even noticed some 97 is better than others, not to sure how to measure it as a performance stat but the car definatly runs smoother with 97 and the esso stuff I have personally found best.

Top gear have just done a test on it also coming to the same conclusion as myself there is a difference can't remember what cars they tested one was a subaru and it made a huge differnce in most modern cars ,also its more enviromentally friendly...

Also I get 320-350 miles from a tank with half motorway half country lanes...

Don't know if it makes any differnce but i've a blitz air filter fitted and a sports cat...

On my trip back from Ireland, using Statoil 95RON I got 375 miles to the tank which I was really surprised with! That was mixed driving in Ireland, then 80MPH average on the motorway from Holyhead to London...

On a performance car like an Impreza running turbo's and with an ECU that's optimised for it it will make a difference. Just the Corolla ECU's aren't optimised for it

i think that u're referring to Fifth gear (or at least I saw it on that show) and they tried to compare the difference on a clio, a golf gti and an impreza...

there was no difference in the clio, slight increase in power and torque in the gti and a massive gain in the impreza... so the end result was that, these 'better' fuels are in fact better but only if your car is able to make the best out of it

i think i'll stick to the cheaper stuff and occasionally give it a blow with higher octane fuel as it's still got 18months warranty before i start messing with it

Well I put 95 in by mistake because I thought it was 97 and i said to my missus the car felt more sluggish I won't be putting that make in again it wasn't until I went to the garage again I realised it was 95 think it was texaco i'm sure they call there 95 fuel "premium unleaded", maybe its just a smoother feeling or something, but I swear my car runs better on 97 and like I said previous the esso stuff seems better than the rest...

However the biggest improvement I made was fitting the sports cat, the car has a much better pull mid range...

I've tried BP Ultimate and I have to see you get better fuel consumption than if you did using the standard stuff. I tend to fill up with the higher RON stuff once a month to clear the fuel system.
