Sub Box Finish

Hi there I am thinking of chaning my install a bit so that I can have 2x12" subs. Boot space isn't a worry as I never use it now anyways so might as well

The only thing I am not sure of at the moment is how to finish the sub boxes off if I do go down this route. They will be made out of wood as I have no idea with fibreglass so not going to attempt that! Most people use carpet but is there anything else I could do which will look good?

If I smoothed off all the edges on the boxes and gave a white basecoat and then used blue paint with silver flakes would this look good or rubbish? Im not sure?

Also any other ideas of finishing the boxes off...not to keen on leather, alacantra, etc would just use carpet if I was going to cover it with something like above.

Any comments are appreaciated apart from ones about lack of boot and whats the point :P

The only problem is, if they look different to the rest of the interior it wont tie in! If your going for it to be coloured you would be looking at colour coding the rest of the interior for a decent tied in look. That blue paint idea doesnt sound too good to me imo. Maybe if it was fibreglass over a wood frame so like plastic blue look. However thats really show car look and a bit tacky again imo. You would again need to tie it all in. Carpet seems your best bet as it will look smart. Tbh there's no point making your boot install look show off as you will rarely look at it as your usually driving when its playing  Unless you plan to go show car styley in which case you would be looking at doing it all.

As said you will still need to access the spare as what if that system above fails! Is there anyway of checking it hasn't malfunctioned before you try it? And also there may be cases where several punctures occure across the tyre and i dont no whether that system is capable of dealing with that!

I would think about making contoured boxes to fit into each side of the boot so you would have shaped sub boxes. This way it looks decent and when carpeted will still tie in. However, i have no idea on what odd shape boxes will do to the sound so it may have to be a regular shaped box with the contouring over it to make it look nice!

Just my thoughts on it! Keep us updated with what you do!

I do agree carpeted boxes do sound the best, but just looking for some different ideas...still no appealing ones. Although the idea of fitting to the contours of the car over the boxes are a good idea Woody.

To be honest my spare is pretty stupid anyways cos its really really small and compared 2 my 16"s might be unsafe to use it at any speed. But I havn't tried the product I posted about but alot of people have recommended it. Other thing is if worse comes to worse I will make it in a way that I can get to the spare.....might take me a half an hour or so to take all the stuff out the boot....which is not ideal but a sacrifice I am willing to make. :D

fair enough! Yeah its all about your personal priorites! It all depends on what this Install is for. Is it to look good to show off to all your mates? Is it to be loudest? Is it to create the best sound quality? Is it a personal mix of all the above? This is why i think looking at others to see what works and what doesn't is a good idea BUT is to be used as a guide. You should then go away and sketch (good fun even if you cant draw like me) and come up with ideas as to what your after. Then get technical and analyse space, cost and work needing to be done. You can also look at technicalities like accessing the spare. This way you can come up with the perfect install FOR YOU!

However it goes, good luck and keep us updated! And if you want any second opinions ask away as there are enough of us to help you out with second, third and god knows how many more opinions of varied tastes!

I got a puncture last week and my spare worked fine (I have 16's fitted.) The puncture on my tyre was on the side wall though so I dont think the stuff you have posted about would have worked. Just a thought.

Thats the reason you are only allowed to travel at a maximim of 50mph when you have 2 different sizes on the same axle.

This post kind of lost me.. the stuff posted about??.. would this be the sealer stuff you put in a punctured tyre?.. as a tyre fitter i feel that this stuff is unsafe, what if there is a nail in your tyre, near or on the sidewall, the stuff seals it up (if indeed it works at all)and you think "ah! good, just the job.. tyre is sorted" you end driving a motorway speeds with a dangerous tyre, personally i would put my spare on and get the punctured tyre repaired or replaced.

OK.. get it back on topic.

Tara.. is your dad's name Sandy?
