Yaris Sr Rear Spoiler

Did something very stupid. Opened my up and over garage door to reverse in. The door must have come down slightly and I reversed into it, end on, smashing my rear window. Called Autoglass who arranged a replacement. Slight problem says the Autoglass man. You have to remove the rear spoiler to fix the glass in. He said he could try and slide the glass under the spoiler but he couldn't promise it would fit exactly and be watertight.

So I phoned Mr T who quoted £75 to remove the spoiler. (Presumably another £75 to put it back on). So not wishing to pay this, or drive another week without a rear window, I gave Autoglass the go ahead to replace the window. Low and behold, it leaks at the very top where the third brake light is positioned. Couple of questions.

1. Can anybody confirm that the spoiler does have to be removed to fix the window properly or have Autoglass done a crap job.

2. Does anyone know the name of the black glue they use to fix the window to the car frame. I think I will have to try and stop the leak by bodging it from the outside.

Sounds like Mr T's pricing: stupidly high, try around some local garages, I'd guess they'd charge must less

Sounds unfortunate

take it and get it done properly, imo

bodged car = bad car

Thanks Nick but I reckon I can fix it without it noticing with a little bit of the right glue. Anyway, I cant pay Mr T's prices before giving it a go myself.

assuming youve got the TTE spoiler... something sounds very wrong

it attaches to the glass with two small casps which you remove with a screwdriver (i think) then its just got a strip of very sticky double sided foam along the top edge of the boot lid, if you give it a shove from beneath it lifts up and pulls away....

then just get some thick double sided tape and its easy to refit... and reclamp

i dont understand how someone tried to 'slide the glass under it'

I have the standard factory fit spoiler (my Yaris SR is a Japanese manufactured one). Have just checked and there are no clasps or screws showing. I've also taken out the rubber stopper from under the rear tailgate close to the spoiler and there's nothing. The spoiler isn't attached to the glass but overhangs it, fitting very snugly. In fact it looks to me like the spoiler is moulded to the tailgate. I am becoming suspicious that Autoglas have simply done a crap job!

unbolt it eithier side of the top of the bootlid and then pull it off fit window (leave to set for a day or so) then refix as said with sticky tape and clamp back on any probs just ask,

whats the age of the car? can you get a picture?

does the spoiler stop 1/3 the way down the screen or doesit come all the way down the sides of the glass to the metalwork?

But they warned you that this might happen beforehand you said.... so surely its not the fact they've done a crap job, they told you the spoiler might be a problem and you told them to go ahead anyway.....

If it is the standard TTE spoiler which is fitted as standard to the SR, there is a alan key screw either side, you have to lift the boot hatch to get at them, and it should be easy to unsrew those, then its just a matter of peeling the spoiler away from the car carefully.

As said before this should be the case, i know because i fitted this spoiler to my car myself!

This is beginning to sound weird to me. There are absolutely no screws/allan key fittings anywhere to be seen, inside or out, unless the spoiler is somehow attached via the bolts that fix the tailgate to the rest of the car. It looks to me like the spoiler is simply stuck on the car. Does it make any difference if it is a Japanese model? I bought the car from new so it is a standard spoiler.

I know the Autoglass technician said that I could have problems but I am a bit suspicious that Autoglass didn't mention anything about removing the spoiler when I originally arranged the replacement. Surely they must have known about this if that is correct. I am just wondering whether the technician was wrong about having to remove the spoiler because the glass seems to fit ok in the correct position. It just leaks. Not enough glue perhaps.

From the comments made here I am also having further doubts about my car. I have had numerous faults with it since I bought it from new. Knowing the reliability of the Yaris, and the fact that Japanese ones are meant to be the best, I have always been suspicious of my car and what happened to it prior to my purchase. Now it appears that my spoiler is different from the norm, I am even more suspicious.

yeah a shot of the back end will be good, it might be the 'Sportpack' spoiler as opposed to the TTE one, some import and earlier cars came with them before the TTE version was released
