Too Much Engine Oil?

Hi there,

Just discovered that my engine is actually 1ZZ-FE instead of 2ZZ-FE... which needs 3.7L instead of 4.4L

I changed the engine oil and added the whole bottle of 4L Mobil 1. Woudl that cause any harm? it's only 0.3L overfill, is it worth draining some of them out?

having your engine oil too full can cause problems

as the crankshaft rotates it will eventually churn the oil and this will cause foam

this will increase your oil temperature and you'll lose oil pressure and it won't lubricate the things its needs to, ie your engine and important surfaces

drain a bit out!

Put the jack back loosen the drainplug put something under it to catch the oil .

when the drainplug is loose just put it a little sideways than some oil comes out . 03, liter is as much as a large Beker ( or a can of coca Cola) when you think there,s enough out tighten the drainplug again .

get the jack under the car out and check the oil level again

0.3L will do no harm to the engine at all.

You'll find it'll maybe be 5-6 mm above the full mark on the dipstick. Not enough for the crank webs to stir the oil up or cause leaking from the seals. You're more at risk to damaging the threads in the pan or the gasket and creating another form of leak.

You can get away with it up to about half a litre over full I reckon

Oh and just as a point of interest you're profile says a 1.6 corolla. That's a 3ZZ not a 1ZZ. They only fit the 1ZZ to the Verso corolla.

Check the dipstick, if its only a little over the full mark then you should be ok, otherwise drain a bit out until the level is right

Thx for the info, black knight and jones. I am not sure what engine it is actually, haha, but i know it's a 03 1.6, does that mean a 3ZZ? the reason why i assume it's 1ZZ is because i have got a "service manual" from eBay and on the manual, it only says 1ZZ or 2ZZ, which i assume 1ZZ since 2ZZ is for a 1.8 upwards?

It's a 3ZZ. You should be able to find the stamping above the gearbox somewhere if you look closely. Oil capacity is the same as the 1ZZ though.

1ZZ is the 1.8 Variable Valve Timing Model (about 120bhp)

2ZZ is the 1.8 Variable Valve Timing and Lift Model (about 190bhp)

i had my car serviced (a 1.4 vvt-i) by the toyota dealer a few months ago, and when i checked the oil stick i found i had quite some extra oil... (roughly i think it's between 0.5 - 1.0cm above the highest dot)

is this bad too or do they do it on purpose, since i know of other people who have the same issue...

Reckon that's about half a litre so no won't do any harm
