I was hoping that someone would answer this as I have grease leaking out around the steering knuckle on my 96 Hilux

Are you sure it is not oil coming from the axle and leaking past the seal onto the swivel? Mine's doing it on both sides, I got the seal kit from Roughtrax but I have not fitted it yet.

Common problem of the oil seal failing as LongRat said - the front diff oil gets into the hub, mixes with the grease and leaks out.

We normally repack the hub to 3/4 full when the hub is stripped to replace the oil seal.

Many thanks for this. I have meant to check the diff oil level but the drain plug seems completely stuck - cant unscrew it!!

Is it possible to renew the oil seals with out special tools or specialist knowledge??

The guy at Roughtrax told me it wasn't a problem. He gave me an exploded diagram of the axle with all the seals on it. A work colleage also said he had done the job out on the trail before, so I doubt specialist gear is needed.

Hope it helps.
