Gen 4 - True Double Din?

Edit: I meant Gen 6, had a brain freeze :o

Greetings all!

I'v spent a few hours this morning beavering through threads, some really helpful info around here :) I'v noticed that 'Stereo' changing i.e the stock Sony "double din" changer to an aftermarket one seems to be a hot topic, and i'v found what i need about that :)

However, I'm balancing my options as i'v recently purchased a lovely 1.8sr, and would like to upgrade from the stock sound system. Is the current apature for the Gen 4 true double din? i.e could i purchase a double din head unit and hope for it to slot straight in? I'll probably end up getting a blanking plate and using a single, but would be nice to know as i think a double would look better.

Regards,

jack

99.9% sure it is. Same as the Gen5. But the Gen 5 has a cup holder beneath the double din space, not sure if the Gen6 has one there. But if it`s supposed to and it isn`t then the space will obviously be larger than double din. :D Did that make sense????

hehe, think so. there no cup holder there (thats in the arm rest). But if its true double din in the Gen5, sounds very likely it will be in the 6 - thanks :)

I was under the impression that it was just ever so slightly smaller than true double din. From what I have read you have to file the edges down a bit to get a lot of double din stereos in. My Single din doesn't have the surround around it as that was too wide to fit, so if the replacement has a surround it will need widening or removing as the stereo is designed to go behind the dash and use the dash as the surround.

Hope that all makes sense

Ok, so i went down to Halfords to see if they could sort me out a facia adapter, in the case that i decide not to go double din. Low and behold, i have problems. According to the Autoleads book, the G6 doesnt need an facia adapater, claiming its a single Din is standard. Clearly not!

Anyone had any luck finding the exact one for this model? the Halfords guy brought out the 'FP-11-00' kit, which seemed more of a universal type kit than a custom built celica one. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so wanting the best possible solution :P

So do you want a single din adapter? Proper ones can be got from Toyota for about £50 - although a lot of people including me have them spare

Basically i want a single din head unit, and something non-trashy to fill the gap. i havnt looked at the fitments yet, but im hoping there are fitments in the dash to fix a single din straight in. Is this true?

And i want one spare! you got it with the car?

Yes there are fitment to put a single din in easily - but you need something to fill the cap at the top.

My car came with a single din radio in and a genuine Toyota Blanking panel, but I thought the blanking panel was a bit of a waste of space so I purchased a tray from another member on here which fitted in above and lets me put my phone and gps unit in there above the stereo.

That's why I've got a spare Genuine Toyota Adapter

I'm presuming you would want to keep the blanking panel for spares? ;)

I guess it would be nice to keep it in case the next owner prefers it but I don't mind selling it. Although they fetch a fair price for the genuine ones. They're over £50 at the Dealers.

I guess I would sell it for £25 but to be honest you are probably better off finding an aftermarket one with a pocket in etc. Just some people prefer to have genuine Toyota with the name embossed on

Well, it was more the issue with the colour/genuinne image. I like everything to be as perfect as poss, and having looked at the autoleads facia stuff, the materials and colour of the plastic is a bit crappy - also i'd have to custom fit it a bit, which i dont like the idea of.

I'll pm you in a week or so when i'v decided and bought the head unit i want, and see if anything changed up till then. But if you want to keep it for reselling purposes, i fully understand ;)

Dreamblaze,

Just a quick one for you, i recently put a stereo in my celica gen 6, biggest nightmare in the world, as the stereo i bought was an old single din size, but the problem arose because the stereo had the surround fitted on it and it didn't come off, therefore i had to chop the surround off with a hacksaw to get it to fit in the space and for the trim to go back on, i would reccomend you make sure that the stereo you get has a surround that comes off, without having to hack it off, as firstly its a nightmare and seciondly i don't think you want to be doing that to a brand new stereo, cos then you won't be able to return it if it gives you trouble,

Hope this helps

mine was an old Pioneer, but i think most of the new ones are ok as i think the surround is seperate,i know the kenwood ones definately have a seperate surround, but i'm not sure if all of them are like that.

Yeah i think your right. my sony is a one or two years old, and i remember when it first put it in my corolla i had to detatch an outer frame, then bolt on some fixings to the side of the head unit.
